I just had a sick thought. Is it possible, in addition to the political payoffs, Obama views David Petraeus as a political threat in 2012? Has designs on strong-arming an irresponsible pullout that would lead to full collapse of regional stability? And would then hang that on Petraeus' head to prevent any possibility of him becoming another Eisenhower?

Remember, this Obama fellow eats and breathes politics. His primary experience was professional electioneering, getting elected to political office.

I wonder what would happen if the JCS simply recalculated next years budget to be 20% larger than this year's... and then cut 10% off it.

Then submit the budget to Congress, where it is passed or rejected in the public’s eye.

After all, Congress controls the purse-strings of the government, NOT the President. (He can, however, override the JCS on how the money should be spent.)
