I remember my alarms going off when the doofus bishop read that line when he presented their "Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship". It was so clear that they inserted the "racism" to muddy the waters.

I believe that the statement is not meant to muddy the waters, but to imply that racism and abortion are equally immoral. This is intended to permit Catholic voters to tell themselves that the inherent racism of Republican candidates morally balances the pro-abortion stance of Democrats. Once that balance is established, the Catholic voter is freed to ignore abortion when choosing candidates.

The authors employed their good Catholic educations to delicately insert an excuse for promoting abortion into what at first appears to be an anti-abortion statement. Very clever, and utterly vile.
