Some $30 billion, or less than 5% of the spending in the bill, is for fixing bridges or other highway projects.

That's what is really infuriating about this nonsense. For all the demagoguing about "crumbling highways" after the Minneapolis disaster, the Democrats could hardly be bothered to fund them.

The reason, I suppose, is that highways don't make great pork. Highways run through multiple states and dozens of congressional districts, making it harder for one politician to take credit. Politicians much prefer to build The National Smegma Museum in their district, because such things make good TV commercial backdrops.

Infuriating.
