WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Senate on Monday backed Timothy Geithner to be Treasury secretary, setting aside misgivings about his failure to pay some taxes in light of his experience battling the financial crisis.

Geithner, 47, was expected to be sworn in quickly to help lead President Barack Obama’s efforts to stabilize a worsening economy. In coming weeks, he is expected to unveil reforms to the United States’ $700 billion financial bailout program to provide more support for housing and credit markets, and possibly a new effort to absorb troubled assets from banks.

The Republicans should start the drum beat about dems not paying taxes and use Geithner and Conyers as the poster boys. But, they have no balls they will just get back to their corner where the dems have ordered them to go....

It would be interesting if some jurors refused to convict tax cheats after this.

"Well, that sucks the big one."

Au contraire mon frère. The Dems just handed the GOP Congressional and Senatorial Election Committee's their first mid-term campaign commercial. We should all rejoice. Change you can believe in.

Orrin Hatch needs to be read out of the Republican Party. Damn the man for saying that Geithner’s tax issues were not important!

When the economic ship goes down, Hatch is going with it. Republicans who confirmed him and who choose to sign on to the stimulus are going to be voted out.

It’s funny how the Dems cry and bitch about “inexperience” on the Republican side when it comes to a candidate but they have NO issue putting in a tax cheat who for 4 years did NOT pay his taxes and uses some phony baloney excuse and has no problem becoming Secretary of the Treasury. Disgusting what has happened to this country. Why should anyone pay taxes if this tax cheat can become our treasurer.

Isn't this setting a precedent? Shouldn't we all get a pass?

Can you see my head exploding? This is so enormously frustrating. And to top it off, I don’t think the current GOP would recognize a strong campaign issue if it walked in off the street and introduced itself. There’s bound to be some reason why we won’t mention it ... we have to play nice, or all get along, or something.

Hey with Obama, I guess our inhouse joke about “The USSA, The United Soviet States of America” isnt too far out it would seem.

Who knew we’d be so psychic.

You’re assuming the GOP will even show up in any meaningful opposition. If they didn’t fight much in 2006, clueless as to why they lost 2008 (they just blame the conservative base and an Obama Administration doing its best to separate the elected Republicans from there base), what makes you so certain we have a chance in 2010 or 2012 even if the economy tanks the big one due to reckless policies? If we do not have leadership, we will not win anything and in fact things could get worse despite whatever damage is currently being done. Think FDR.

I could be wrong on this, and I hope that this is the case, but people don’t change much once they have traveled the path of self destruction save a miracle or epiphany based on my experience and reading of history. If leadership gushes out of the woodwork from the current crop, good, but I am not counting on it based on what I have seen over the last 11-13 years.

“”Why should anyone pay taxes if this tax cheat can become our treasurer”

Maybe the 2008 1040 form will be revised and we’ll all have a line we can sign that will read “See the boss” so we’re not signing our returns under penalty of perjury.

Perfect guy to assign the task of blaming China for manipulating their currency while begging them to buy more worthless U.S. bonds.

My wife is a CPA. I have suggested to her that as a last resort when dealing with the IRS, she should invoke Geithner’s name and this precedent to get non-payment penalties abated.

When the new bills are printed with Geithner’s signature on the front, write on it with either “TAX CHEAT” and/or “UNPATRIOTIC”.

More hypocrisy from the Washington “good old boys” club. Garbage protects garbage.

Washington is truly out of control and totally corrupt. When you think you've seen it all they never fail to disappoint you further. They are on autopilot.
