Guns are imperfect mechanical devices. Even the highest quality guns can be found to be defective at purchase.

One of the evil, scary "assault weapons" that I had to send out of state was an Armalite AR-10 which cost me almost $2000. When it arrived, the factory had mistakenly installed an AR-15 part into it instead of the proper part. This kept the rifle from cycling properly. Only a range test revealed the problem and much analysis was required to identify the problem.

On the same rifle, the feed ramp transition to the barrel crosses a seam in the metal. This small seam was capable of causing the pointy cartridges to bounce and misfeed, also causing cycling problems. Polishing the feed ramp eliminated the problem.

That's two serious problems in just a single, expensive firearm. Lower quality firearms tend to have even more difficulties that can only be worked out by firing them. For that reason, a person would take as many of his firearms as he could successfully test in order to refine the quality of his arms.

A few years ago, I attended a class to qualify for a Nevada carry permit. At that time Nevada required that one qualify with every firearm that one intended to carry and the make and model of the firearm appears on the permit. This required me to travel with SEVEN handguns to attend the class, and even then the inconvenience of carrying more has resulted in my not being able to carry some of my handguns using that permit.

You state that you don't own a gun. You don't state where you live. It is not possible to appreciate the burden on the law-abiding created by anti-gun liberals without jumping through their hoops yourself. You could probably find a gun-owning Freeper near where you live to help you exercise your Second Amendment rights.

I pointed out in another posting that the LAX airport is in the middle of a densely populated area. There are areas just outside the airport where the planes fly directly overhead at about 200 feet. The persecution of the man in this article does not lessen in the slightest whatever threat there might be nor is such threat lessened in the slightest by any of the anti-gun laws on the books.

If you can accept that fact, then you might be able to judge whether an injustice is occurring or not. Giving up freedom is not going to solve the problem.

"Has he been living under a ROCK for the past 7 years?? Sorry, but carrying a trunk full of guns and a thousand rounds of ammo to an airport is just a stupid thing to do."

The guns and ammo were separated, no guns were loaded, and all the guns were in LOCKED transport boxes. The "assault rifle" in question was REGISTERED per California law. It's obvious except to the asinine that the individual was trying to comply with the law.

Not even close.

There is a law which bans magazines which hold more than ten rounds. Those of us who stocked up prior to the effective date are set because of a "grandfathering" of the existing mags. Others must be content to do with only ten rounds.

The Ruger Ranch Rifle is just that; a light-weight, semi-automatic, magazine-fed, rifle which fires the same round as most AR-15 type rifles and which is very popular with ranchers for taking care of coyotes and other vermin. It is fully legal to purchase (with a ten round magazine) as long as it is not equipped with a pistol grip, a flash suppressor, a folding stock, or whatever else the law states. (Federal used to outlaw bayonet lugs but I don't think that was ever on Kalifornia's list.)

Posting #148 above contains a link to a discussion of "off-list lowers". These are AR-15 type or AK-type receivers which can be built into rifles which are APPARENTLY legal to own in Kalifornia. They don't have the evil features like pistol-grips and they aren't on the list of makes and models which are banned.

Some of the purchasers of OLLs (off-list-lowers) were hoping that the state would add their gun to the list, thus allowing them to obtain a Kalifornia "assault weapon" despite the ban. After being added to the list, the gun owner would have 90 days to register such a receiver and then would own an "assault weapon". From that time forward, they would be able to add all the evil features that would otherwise be illegal to add.

Unfortunately for them, the anti-gunners decided to change the law which had previously allowed new guns to be added to the "assault weapons" list. These people are now stuck with rifles that can't have pistol grips.

In my case, I was unwilling to be trapped like the man described in this article. For that reason, I am comforted by the fact that my rifles can't be added to the list. (Unless the legislature itself decides to outlaw them explicitly.)

The "assault weapon" laws in Kalifornia have had negligible effect on anything whatever, aside from inconveniencing law-abiding gun owners. The same state legislature that would mandate wheel-chair ramps has outlawed rifle features which would be of great value to persons who have lost the use of one arm. I'm surprised that there hasn't been a challenge to the law on that basis alone.

Thanks for the link. I have read that in the past and I scanned it quickly. I think it is out of date in that the legislature took away any non-legislative way to add any guns to the "assault weapons" list. The "experts", such as may exist within the Kalifornia bureaucracy, must have signalled the hopelessness of the whole thing to the legislature.

There were evidently many thousands of off-list-lowers imported in bulk during a short window of time, creating a situation where the legislature could just ignore the issue, or outlaw such guns in the future, creating thousands of newly legal "assault weapons".

If you wanted to, you can arrest and charge anyone with some violation of the law at any time. Billions of stupid laws out there.

They can arrest you and charge you with libel against an innocent person. It doesn’t make you guilty.

I have flown in and out of LAX and most other major airports in the country. I have carried and shipped my pistols and hunting rifles numerous times without any hassle. I am licensed in most states, and I pack when I work. Something isnt adding up here.

I don't know, but I do know this; any claim that Kalifornia is dire need of funds and that new taxes are justified is without merit as long as the state continues to maintain gun registration records and expend state resources harassing law-abiding gun owners.

If avoiding bankruptcy means that I must continue to have my right to keep and bear arms infringed, then I encourage bankruptcy.

That is alright, if CA pushes this he becomes another test case for incorporation. I would think the whole thing gets thrown out under probable cause. The airport drop off lane is not a secure area and they have no reason to check vehicles there.

That said, the money that CA thows at that crap is just nuts.

Ya get taxed out the wazoo and a DEA helicopter shines a spotlight in your bedroom at 2 am because some jasper is cookin meth down in the canyon.

Nothing gets done but hey... The Gubmint workers get paid.

OK. I am off to watch 24 now
