They don’t expect Metro (that’s our subway, with a Parisian name, for those of you in Rio Linda) to cover the load. The word is out: Walk.
The subway station for the Convention Center will be closed during all of the (5?, 6?) balls there, as well.
If the crowds are as big as their worst case, the town is pure gridlock and no amount of planning will solve it. Only time.
A) There will be far fewer 0bamorrhoids than the breathless wet-groined bozos in the MSM claim there will be
or
B) A whole lot of 0bamorrhoids are in for a really ugly surprise.
DC is a cluster fxxx on a good day ... 20JAN09 should be amusing. In a sick sort of way.
Anyone that goes within 30 miles of the District on that day needs to understand that insanity is present on a good day. This thing has all the signs of being a huge CF of the first degree.
I plan on going to a movie or two and checking briefly when I return home to see if the riots have broken out.
Take my advice all who read here, if you know someone who is going, and is not familiar with the back trails, tell them to say their prayers, and then tell them they are not going to get through this without pain and frustration. It's just nuts given the restrictions.
Happy Trails!
Walk. Soooo, if they’re shutting down I-66 inside the Beltway, they’re expecting people to walk the Orange Line from Dunn Loring? Or they’re putting on extra buses and trains from the suburbs, I guess.
Looking at your map in #17, something tells me there’s going to be a lot of charter buses with missing items (or maybe a few missing buses) considering where some of those parking areas are. East Capitol Street by RFK? Anacostia? Has the crime situation cleared up any in Southeast in the past 15 years, or will the bus passengers still need bulletproof vests to make it to the parade route?
BTW, I agree with you about driving in DC. I lived in the Virginia burbs for two years in the late ‘80s, during the height of the real estate boom, and never had any trouble driving in DC proper when I had to...except for traffic circles. Man, I hated those things. DC’s actually easier to drive in, I think, than downtown Atlanta, simply because it’s laid out more intelligently; L’Enfant’s grid really does make it easier to find your way around.

Whew! If it's as cold and icy out as it was for the last Freeper inaugural ball, folks will be in for a nasty surprise.
We metro'd into town that night - I had a parka over my gown and wore giant pink snow boots and put my pretty heels in my pockets.
Come on ice storm...>:)
I'll LMAO.
From the DHS release:
I-395, and Route 66 will be closed inside the beltway.
George Washington Parkway will be closed from Alexandria to I-495.
The 14th Street, Theodore Roosevelt, Key, and Memorial bridges will be closed.
Soft Close begins at 0300 1/20
Hard Close effective at 0400 1/20
Roads begin opening at 2100 1/20
Hard barriers removed overnight 1/20
Expect traffic delays arriving to the airport during morning rush hour on 1/21.
I don't have a link back to the actual release, the presentation was disseminated to DC busineses as a PowerPoint. I copied a page of the text here.
We're off Tuesday, but I am kinda wondering if my building will be open Wednesday. I'm just sayin'...
Of COURSE not: Barry Zero will be riding his magical flying Unicorn into town. . .
Is was like that for the last lockdown. The Chicago police stationed outside our row of houses was laughing at the DC drivers skill in a dusting of snow. Having grown up in Colorado Springs, I can see the point.
Well,
I live downtown and work in the burbs. I already took the 20th off and I was talking with our CEO on my way in today. He said he was considering closing the office in any event. But seeing as how I take the Mt Vernon Square metro (it’s 3 blocks from my house) to the Red Line to work, and they’re closing that, starting when? I am going to be walking to Metro Center that Monday I think. What a frigging mess. Oh well, if riots do break out..I’ll simply wait till dawn and head for a freind’s place.
Blizzard a few days before and freezing rain the night before woul be great.
The various bridges and approach highways would be a parking lot anyway. If they are closed and available for emergencies, at least they are good for something.
Salute the uniform, not the man. The Secret Service has real concerns, given the crowds, of worst case scenarios.
The trouble with all of this is that is counds like it’s a first time for this expected volume. No one has any experience, and the stakes are high. They are erring on the side of caution.
Be sure to go to the public meeting tomorrow night at 6:30 at the convention center, L Street, north side entrance.
The Secret Service will explain as much at they can/will. It is their show.
Last I heard on the local news here is they were thinking of shutting down Key Bridge, the Teddy Roosevelt Bridge, Memorial Bridge and the 14th Street Bridge to all but emergency vehicles and foot traffic.
I am staying far away from DC on that day. I think it’s going to be one big zoo. I am praying for a hard freezing rain though.
Oh, I understand the Secret Service’s legit concerns and fully agree with them—as much as I don’t like Obama, God knows I don’t want anything to happen to him or his family. (President Biden? DO NOT WANT.)
But if you’ve got squillions of Obamoids staying in the Virginia suburbs outside the Beltway, both west and south, as I’m sure there will be, how do they get to the coronation? Metro can’t handle those loads, and if all the traffic is pushed out onto Arlington Blvd. and Lee Highway and whatever they call US 1 up into Alexandria these days...wow. I can’t even imagine the gridlock.
Makes me glad I’m down here in North Cackalackey, and can safely ignore His Majesty’s assumption of the porcelain throne. Or, more likely, read the FR live thread about it and join in the general nausea and snarkery. :) I feel for you folks that actually live in the District, I really do.

My husband is a journalist whose office is in Georgetown — he’s going to flop on a co-worker’s couch in the city the night before — I think he should be prepared for 2 nights there...
As for me, way down here in Fred, VA — I’m not going to watch the tv or go to a movie — I’m going to volunteer. Haven’t pinpointed exactly what I’ll be doing, but it will be for a CONSERVATIVE cause!
I encourage everyone else to do the same. :)
Your idea to volunteer is a good one.
As for me, I have been staying away from politics mostly since Bambi got the nod. It’s good to get away for awhile sometimes.
Regarding the District, it is interesting that the 19th is a holiday, (MLK) and followed by Bambi Day on the 20th.
Our office is closed both days, but I have to wonder if the mess will get cleaned up by the 21st?
might take more than a day or two to untangle that orgy
OH, the HUGH Manatee
