Wars do not bring recovery. They are a huge waste of money.

In general it is much better to have peacetime spending creating cars, home etc. rather than blowing them up. maybe.

However WW2 did bring in a tremendous amount of money into America's coffers at the beginning when the US was a "neutral" and sold weapons to Allied nations. It provided a lot of good paying jobs in the armament industries and pulled the US out of the Great Depression.

At the same time, it bascially bled Britain and France white.

Not to mention devastating the losers like Germany, Japan and Italy.

I do not believe the new deal prolonged the depression...Hoover had totally blown it. I think Roosevelt saved this country from revolution even if he was a Democrat.

You can believe what you want. The economic contraction of the 1890's was sharper than that of the Great Depression, yet the economy bounced quickly back. I have heard the argument that Roosevelt saved us from revolution by trashing the Constitution and moving the Country only halfway towards socialism; but generally when you offer a group half of what they want they immediately demand all of it and likely even more. Who in the 1930's America was in a position launch a successful revolution and replace our Government?

Most of the communist brought before congress in the 50’s joined in the 30’s. People were desperate...I believe Roosevelt kept the country going during this difficult time. Then there were the Nazis...lots of them floating around having rallies. Economic turmoil creates unrest...which is how Obama got elected this time.

As a student of revolutions it takes more than just Economic turmoil to lay a foundation for revolution. Groups that succeed have been plotting for decades and posses a tight knit vanguard; but they also have competition from groups with whom they cooperate and compete until one group arrives on top. The Communist, the Socialists, the Labor Unions, the Nazis, the Progressives and the Populists; were working with in the system, either in one or both of our primary two parties or by forming third and fourth parties. No outside group had the money, political strength our military support to pull off a successful revolution.

http://newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla/FDR-s-Policies-Prolonged-Depression-5409.aspx

Two UCLA economists say they have figured out why the Great Depression dragged on for almost 15 years, and they blame a suspect previously thought to be beyond reproach: President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

After scrutinizing Roosevelt’s record for four years, Harold L. Cole and Lee E. Ohanian conclude in a new study that New Deal policies signed into law 71 years ago thwarted economic recovery for seven long years.

“Why the Great Depression lasted so long has always been a great mystery, and because we never really knew the reason, we have always worried whether we would have another 10- to 15-year economic slump,” said Ohanian, vice chair of UCLA’s Department of Economics. “We found that a relapse isn’t likely unless lawmakers gum up a recovery with ill-conceived stimulus policies.”

In an article in the August issue of the Journal of Political Economy, Ohanian and Cole blame specific anti-competition and pro-labor measures that Roosevelt promoted and signed into law June 16, 1933........

“This is exciting and valuable research,” said Robert E. Lucas Jr., the 1995 Nobel Laureate in economics, and the John Dewey Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago. “The prevention and cure of depressions is a central mission of macroeconomics, and if we can’t understand what happened in the 1930s, how can we be sure it won’t happen again?”

You are making a distinction without a difference. Roosevelt was forced to concede to economic forces that necessarily brought a huge increase in the economy due to WWII., which, incidentally, brought us out of the great depression as I previously stated.

You also make the mistake of equating a medium sized recession after WWII to the most extended and severe depression in US history. You are going to have to do way better than parsing and comparing apples and oranges to convince a reasonable person.

Not only is it true, it’s not even news. The Great Depression didn’t stop until WWII (actually shortly before), because all the production capacity that had been setting idle was cranked up.
