Ermey played a Drill Instructor, not a Drill Sergeant. There’s no such animal as a Drill Sergeant in the Marine Corps. Only Drill Instructor. Incidentally, Ermey actually served as a Drill Instructor on active duty and also previously acted as a Drill Instructor in “The Boys In Company C”, in the role of SSgt Loyce.

when R. Lee Ermey, retired Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant

Incorrect. Ermey is a retired Staff Sergeant and his disability check reflects that. He was given the honorary rank, only, of Gunnery Sergeant by James Jones in 2002.

That’s what infuriates me about my local media: they don’t tell you jack about what’s happening in the near future, but they have a nice big article AFTER it already happened. Hill AFB is infamous for this.

Interesting story about Ermey’s role in “Full Metal Jacket.” He was not the original choice to play Hartman. He was supposed to be a technical adviser and teach the actor who was going to play Hartman how to act like a drill instructor. But Kubrick found Ermey so convincing that he just decided to go with Ermey himself. Ermey also had a small role in Apocalypse Now too.
