Four days?!?!

Bailey the unknown reindeer would've found her in four minutes!

I hope this very lucky lady recovers okay and doesn't have any lasting effects from her adventure.

I keep my 2nd Carhartt overalls in the back of my jeep all winter, along with a couple of wool blankets, mittens, snowmobile boots and a bag of snacks and jerky. I could last quite a while if I were ever break down on the highway.

And kudos to Ace the dog who found the lady. Job well done by a police dog.

(grin!) You’d be quite comfortable, sounds like!

When I lived in Canada, whenever I ventured forth in winter I always had a large Thermos flask of hot coffee in the car with me, and a box of glucose tablets. The glove box had a couple candles and a Bic lighter (you can get alot of heat from a candle), a flashlight and a sports whistle.

2 men froze to death here in WI this week. One was a newspaper carrier, a rural route, car went into ditch, snow plow driver found his body away from the car. Man had no cell phone. Second man’s truck or car left the snowy road, they found his body 600 feet from his farm house. We’ve had brutally cold weather here and it snows every 2 days. By brutally cold, I mean nights of 10 below and daytime highs of zero to 5. It hit 20 yesterday and it felt warm. More snow yesterday and today. We have had over 3 feet already. Al Gore is a dork.

I work in Ancaster - this was just blocks away. I also got stuck trying to get home. Thankfully, the guys from the shop were in a vehicle not far behind and saw me (I had pulled off the road), and got me out. It was a terrible storm.

We were all very happy and stunned that she was found alive. She had left her car to cross a field, as her home was just on the other side.

She was in critical condition in hospital last I heard, and will likely lose a few digits.

Thank you so very much for your essential insights that lend so much more context to the story.  Thank you so very much for contributing to the thread, and Merry Christmas to you and yours  :-)

I hope this very lucky lady recovers okay and doesn't have any lasting effects from her adventure.

It's still early in the game, but apparently the docs believe she will lose some digits and/or extremities at this point.

Time will tell, and this lady deserves all of our prayers and kind wishes.

Indeed, she may well have died without his help.   Something tells me that this dog will be the recipient of some very special doggie treats and some big hugs from her family, and will probably be honored by the police department as well.

I'm very sorry to hear that and I hope that your community will be able to pull through this with no more fatalities or injuries.  So often people can get lulled into complacency by the tremendous comforts and ease provided by our society, but Mother Nature is always waiting out there, ready to slap you upside the head if you aren't careful.

Al Gore is a dork.

As well as being a tremendous threat to our way of life as we know it.

Very true, but around here the police advise drivers to keep candles in the car. If you’re stranded, a single candle will throw off enough heat to keep you alive.

The problem is that the engines need an unblocked intake and exhaust to run properly. If the intake is even slightly restricted they can produce a lot of CO. The police advise that you should always clear the snow well away from the tailpipe when the engine is running, no mean feat if the snow is drifting.

Coleman makes propane-powered catalytic heaters designed specifically for cars- they run 15 hours on a 1lb cylinder and retail for ~60.

As an aside, today I have a "Mr. Heater Buddy heater"
This IS a small propane heater that runs on those disposable
propane tanks you use for camp stoves and lights.

I have the "Big Buddy" heater.
In my personal experience it will run about 2.5 hours on full heat
with two one-pound bottles of propane.
I suspect it will keep about 400 sq. feet of living space fairly
comfortable under external conditions of freezing to maybe 10
deg. F.
But I'd still get excess bottles of propane in preparation for
more challenging scenarios.
(it's capable of running on full-sized propane bottles with the right rigging)

I bought it last year in case we had a full power outage
and my fairly-homebound father needed to stay warm at home.

Dad went on to his well-earned reward earlier this year.
And the Big Buddy provides my dear mother with lovely warmth
like the old open gas heater that kept the extended family
warm on the family farm.
About five decades ago.

I don’t understand why people in cold climates don’t carry emergency gear
in their vehicles. A sleeping bag and some high energy food would have
turned this into a campout instead of a near tragedy.

And a coffee can with candles and matches in a ziplock plastic bag.

I’m still suprised to discover neighbors (here in Missouri) that
haven’t heard of this effective low-tech method of keeping a car
interior at an at-least habitable temperature for a couple of days.
Until help comes or weather clears so you can safely hike to safety.

It’s such a basic of cold-weather vehicular travel...and even this
Okie knows about it!!!

They do look like those old room heaters.

I bought mine to heat the cabin on my boat during hunting season. Here it can get into the 20's 0r even the teen's during Sept hunting season. I have a conversion hose for that purpose. My"Buddy" is one of those things that never get left behind.

For the car, I decided to revert to the screw-on cylinders because I can keep them in the heated part of the car. A six-pack will be enough to keep me until help arrives, even in the worst weather. The smaller "Buddy" puts out either 4,000 btu's or 9,000 btu's. One pound of propane contains about 22,000 btu's, so even at 9,000 btu's, I have about 15 hours of burn time. Even in the worst weather, help would arrive along the roads I drive.
