I’m with blam on the coffee. Unopenned vaccum sealed cans will last and last. Even once it’s opened, propely covered/sealed it will last quite a while.

Even instant (in a jar) coffee has a long shelf life — even after it is open. I don’t drink the stuff if I don’t have to but I always have it on hand for cooking/baking/kaluha making and I have some in the pantry that has been there for 2 years and it is just as strong as it was the day I openned the jar.

The hand pump at our cabin was replaced a few years ago. If you go that way buy extra seals (”leathers”) to keep on hand. A 10-year old can do the pumping, and will fill up as many pails as you want. Especially if their brother also has to wait his turn to pump! A pail of water is probably 2 to 3 gals. - and pumps in a minute or two.

A hand pump only works if the water is less than 30’ deep as I recall. Below that you need a submersible pump.

I have a big can that is several years old. There is no expiration date. I bought it for my husband but we have not opened it.

Get a bottle of champagne and make an evening of it.

Is it a metal can?

I notice most coffee is in pastic containers these days.

I'm still waiting for you to show my quote that I'm stuck in the house. Couldn't find it, huh? Are you sure you're posting to the right person? I've never lived on a Cul-de-Sac nor ever will.

For your information, we are very rural and surrounded by many ex-Special Forces, etc. We also hunt deer etc. and know the woods like the back of our hands. You stated that you would be part of that gang when you “show up with a dozen of your buddies” to take our food.

Your post #96 said:

“Yeah. Me and a dozen of my buddies. Armed. You don't need food. You need guns. The people with the guns get the food. The people hunkered in their homes get robbed or burned to the ground.”
“The real survivors are those who don't need a house to survive.”

Now you're saying that you'd rob or burn down the houses of those good people that had food stored just because you wanted it?

We're not talking about the Netherlands, we're talking about America. Don't use the liberal tactic of changing the subject when backed into a corner. If you can't answer the question, then just say so. Would you kill a family to feed your face?

You said: >>”But don’t worry, I won’t take your stuff. That wouldn’t be right. You’ll give it to me.”<<

See, there you go again threatening people that were smart enough to stockpile enough food so their family won't go hungry when TSHTF. You're actually saying that you'll take it from them! Unbelievable talk from a long-time FReeper. Are you drunk?

I guess you've never come between a momma bear and her cubs OR a Mormon and his family OR even a lowly “clerk” as you imply.

Oh, and if you and your “gang” do come for my family's food etc. you'll get nothing but lead......lot's of lead.

I haven't had that experience. In fact I wish I could get more of the plastic containers, as I reuse both the metal cans and the plastic cannisters for a variety of things.

I was going to post that comment about a momma bear. Evidently Rambo hasn’t factored in that if takes food from our kids we will come after him. The FR women here don’t seem to be the type to wring their hands and just cry!

Well, I have over fifty pounds that I'll either drink or use for barter.
Barter is my main idea though.

BTW, I'm prepared to throw everything I've 'hoarded' away if I never need it. (I view it as cheap insurance, I will eat Spam and canned ham if I have to though.)

I don’t like wasting so I rotate stuff. I don’t know why I didn’t the coffee. This next year it’s going to be time for some spam. I have 3 that are collectors items though. I hate to open those.

I’m glad you’re on our team.

This guy is nuts. He is Rambo only in his dreams. I bet he can’t walk a mile without a smoke break. Hopefully there aren’t too many out there like him. If so, I’m buying more ammo tomorrow morning!

Thanks....panax

Whoa..don’t shoot him. Think about it... With a little “attitude adjustment” we could have him hunting for fresh meat for all of us:’)

They mentioned bleach for washing clothes, water purification, etc. My recommendation is that bleach is something you should have plenty of if there is an disease epidemic. There is nothing better for disinfecting in such a situation.

Also those people who are going to go to a safe area where there is friends or family or is expecting friends and family to come to them in event of a disaster should consider an epidemic situation. If you or them is leaving an city or place that is known to be infected with smallpox or the plague or a deadly flu then will the people in the safe area welcome you if you might be carrying the disease?

In most other situations the rural Mormons I suspect will do better than most as they will have their local church to rally around and neighbor helps neighbor and they will defend each other from threating outsiders. On the other hand in an epidemic it will be everybody for themselves in many cases.

I would recommend people plant food gardens, learn home canning of the produce from the gardens along with cultivating the seeds from the plants for future gardens. Rabbits or Chickens would be a good source of protein that most people could raise on a normal home plot of land.
