Any money is only money while it can be traded in lieu of direct barter. Gold is a commodity in limited supply. But it has no value to the owner beyond what it might be hoped to trade for.

If society totally breaks down, gold will be worthless. Lead will be exactly as valuable as gold. It makes into the same number of bullets.
