Porshe designed it for Hitler

Frankmobile. Somehow it brings up some troubling images.

Looks like, smells like, and sounds like crap, but there is no limit to what you can shove into the trunk.

I think that is something different from this nationalizing rubbish. The other link said that the Bush Administration ‘is cool’ to the idea. But who really knows at this point?

We are in for some very scary times. Australia is looking better by the day.

Well I have been driving cars for over 40 years now and have never once ever owned a 'foreign' car. Every one has been from one of the Big Three.

But if they nationalize the auto industry, my next car will be an import.

Why not? Our ‘conservative’ Republican President partially nationalized banks. Partial nationalization of key industries is doubleplus good policy during economic crises. And remember, we’ve always been at war with Eastasia.

They may be able to nationalize the American auto companies but how are they going to make us buy their crappy cars?

They now own the banks that loan you the money, it would not be hard to crowd-out the competition with higher interest rate on imports. It's an isolationists dream come true.

"I wonder what happens when the government runs out of money? Or print so much that the dollar’s value dwindles to nothing?"

Wat? He'll just make up the difference with a tax on prostitution!

Well, not exactly invent, but Adolf Hitler was indeed the driving force behind the car. In the 1930s, cars cost more than most people earned in a year. When Hitler became the chancellor of Germany in 1933, he promoted the idea of a car affordable enough for the average working person. The Volkswagen, which means “people’s car” in German, was essentially a political promise to win the public’s goodwill.
Hitler met with automotive designer Ferdinand Porsche in 1933 and charged Porsche with creating the new car. The chancellor required that the Volkswagen carry two adults and three children, go up to 60 miles per hour, get at least 33 miles per gallon, and cost only 1,000 reichsmarks. Hitler may also have named the car the Beetle.

In 1938, Hitler had the KdF Wagen factory built to produce the cars designed by Porsche. But by the time the factory was complete, Hitler had invaded Czechoslovakia and Poland. The factory was dedicated to building military vehicles, and the people’s car fell by the wayside during World War II.

After the war, the factory ended up in the British section of occupied Germany. The British military re-opened the factory, named it Volkswagen, and finally gave control of the company to the German government.

After 1948, Volkswagen introduced new models across Europe. By 1955, over 1 million cars had been built. The VW beetle started selling in the U.S., and in 1972 the people’s car overtook the Ford Model T to become the most popular car ever made.

Well, honestly, what does it matter now? GM is broke. Ford is broke. Chrysler should have been broke years ago.

This is all due to government regs and union power, combined with, yes, stupid management. I could see this happening: they "nationalize" it---the industry collapses further until no one buys any of their cars---and sometime in a Republican administration, a "Thatcher" moment occurs where British Leland is sold off (if it's still around at all). I hope GM/Ford/Chrysler stockholders immediately bailout.

Its called a currency collapse and you get wiped out as nobody will take your money because it has no value.

Buy gold unless they decide to confiscate it (as in the FDR years) or Swiss Francs.

Its like musical chairs. When the music stops, you need to be out of dollars and safely into appreciating assets or you lose.

My parents had one just like that when I was a toddler. The thing I remember most about it was the axle falling off as we were backing out of a parking lot.

Many of the foreign automakers have been opening plants all over the south. Maybe you can buy from them. They aren’t unionized.....yet.

The British tried this in the 1970’s and it was a disaster. Most of the auto industry is gone now. The union/Labor crowd demanded government ownership and the results were predictable.
