Going after a nominee because of appeal to moderates and independents is a proven failure. It's hard to imagine a Republican nominee with more inherent appeal to moderates and independents than McCain. But that appeal never translated into the necessary grassroots enthusiasm.

Everyone I know outside FR (who is a Conservative) loves Governor Palin. The only people I personally know who are trashing her are some liberal, college professor types who are almost-friends. Their noses are so far up in the air, they've been snorting global warming. I even know a lot of average Democrats who like her and are pissed at this trashing of her..

“Romney may not be the preeminent choice among FR, but in the general population I think he would be. I think a great many FReepers are out of touch with the electorate if they honestly think politicians like Duncan Hunter or the chick from Alaska are going to strike a chord.
Conservatism is going through a tough time right now, rightly or wrongly. That’s one of the reasons McCain is the nominee—it’s not a DNC conspiracy to select him, it’s a reflection of voter discontent with the perceived “conservative” elements of the GOP.”
