An extensive interview with Crystal? And CNN didn’t air it? Well, no wonder the poor girl has to write a book to get her side of the story told.

Can’t help but notice that only credentialed media may attend the presser. Guess that excludes the blog hooligans. Too bad!! Liestoppers and KC were the only real journalists covering this story from the start.

Thanks for the comic relief, abb. I need it as we approach this election.

The KNOW bookstore is on Fayetteville st in Durham which is in the “all pepper, no salt” side of town. It is eclectic and interesting, with lots of “alternative” black literature. Everything from Marxist tracts to Gospel books to black power stuff to Thomas Sowell, Shelby Steele and Clarence Thomas.

They have an open jazz jam session there on Friday nights which is FABULOUS. One of the premiere alto sax players in the world (used to be prof of Math at U of Colorado) is a friend of mine and plays there frequently. W. Marseilis (sic?) has been there as well, because there is a tremendous music program (jazz, mostly) at the local black college NC Central, just down the street. The soul food (meals on Friday nights for the jazz) is awesome. Enough lard to fry a whale, but amazing collards, beans and rice, fried chicken, fried okra, sweet potato pie, banana pudding, cornbread and iced tea! Several nights there I have been the only white guy. I was more worried about navigating thru the parking lot (it is a bad part of town) than being in the store, though.

It is interesting, but not surprising, that she would be doing her book gig there. The Know is a weird place. You will find your typical professional victim race baiters there, yet one toothless old black guy with a white goatee (all I have ever heard him called is “Pop”) will swear a blue streak at the “crypto-Marxists”(a phrase I believe he borrowed from Maggie Thatcher) and swear that Ronald Reagan was our greatest president. He knows free market economics and swears that the welfare programs are a demonic scheme by the wealthy white elite to keep black folks down and destroy them. No one has ever given me a hard time there. Maybe because I am cheery and dont’ apologize for being white or being there. Only one time a guy kind of bumped me hard and I just turned around and said “I am here to listen to the music, awright?” and he said, “sure honk, listen away” and that was that.

I may drift on over there tomorrow if work permits, and if I do, I will have my picture taken in front of the store and post it here.

I really do have sorry and pity mixed with disgust about Ms Mangum. She is just another crack whore who got caught up in something way bigger than she is. The really evil people here are the Durham DA’s office and the race baiting pimps who showed up like flies on a turd to pimp her out. A truly compassionate leader in the black community would have helped get her into some substance abuse program, gotten her a lawyer who is a good p.r. spokesperson, had her issue a statement that she was under the influence of drugs and alcohol and recanted her story, and then tried to help her with some decent, caring, hardworking black people in a local black church. She was mad at being insulted and abused by the rich white kids (”HEY NI66ER, TELL YOUR GRANDPA THANKS FOR MY COTTON SHIRT!”), but someone who cared about her could have helped her see that this was not the way to “punish” them. Again, the leadership in the local black community used her, no differently than the arrogant little entitled sh*ts at Duke used her.

I am sure this book thing is just a way to try and get a little money out of the notoriety. (captain obvious, at your command, here)

I didn’t think dancing was so messy.

Fire! Products Inc., a film studio that is representing her.

Sounds like they have a Lifetime Network movie in the pipeline, or an after school special.

She fits right in down there in Fayette Nam.

Although she hasn’t been quite the same since she was pregnant, got drunk and was dragged across the parking lot at the dance club in Durham...

Obviously, you’ve not been paying attention to what happened. There was a conspiracy to frame innocent people - sort of Durham version of an old-fashioned lynching. It’s all documented in the numerous civil lawsuits now working.

I agree with every word of your description. How does this refute anything I said? I never meant to imply Ms. Mangum was some innocent and pure victim. They never are in situations like this.

I still assert that she was a pawn and was used no less by the civil powers and professional race baiters than if they had called her up and paid her to dance, take off her clothes, and perform sexual acts on them. I feel pity for her, but that goes way back to when I was driving my car through a bad section of Beaumont TX one night. At a stop sign, some girl with her boobs half out thought I stopped for her, I guess, and opened the door. She looked in the back seat, saw my daughter in her carseat, and said "oh, I guess you ain't datin' tonight?" I said "no, honey. But then, on impulse, I said "wait a second." "Yeah?" "I just wanted to tell you that you are such an incredibly valuable person that Jesus Christ, the son of God, died for you. He loves you and so do I." I never will forget the look that came over her face. It was not a hateful snarl (I have seen those, sometimes). It was one of shock, shame, and embarrassment. I just wish someone in the black community (many of the leaders are pastors) had really CARED about Ms. Mangum. Maybe it would not have helped at all. But it is for certain that it is the only thing that WOULD HAVE helped, if anything would have. That is all I am trying to say. I don't believe in victims. Pawns? Yes. Victims? no.

Simply put, she lied. She hollered ‘rape’ when there was none. It was a false accusation. Had she not done that, this entire episode would never have happened.

True, she was used a a pawn by others, but she started it, bottom line.

And she should be in jail for it, in my opinion.

I have no problem with asserting that she should have been convicted of a crime for false accusation. You can add prostitution, public drunkenness, driving under the influence, and several other charges to that. Demanding that justice be done and that people be held accountable for their actions is not the same thing as saying they are “just” criminals, though. Nifong should do PRISON time, not just misdemeanor statute time. The leaders of Durham’s black community should be horsewhipped, not to speak of Sharpton and Jackson, the two biggest pimps who ever walked. Finally, every one of those guys in the house should be convicted of solicitation.

That last one sounds insane, due to the crazy miscarriage of justice and the hundreds of thousands of dollars these kids had to spend to get off on a completely fabricated rape charge, I know. However, just like Ms. Mangum should have to pay the piper for her actions, so should the guys who started the whole sordid mess.

Municipal courts see human detritus paraded through like Ms. Mangum every day. Believe me, if she lives, she will do the time you want for her to do, and will probably die with a needle in her arm or of alcohol poisoning within the next few years. It is tied up with the way she lives. I still assert that her own life is a tragedy, not just an outrage.

Solicitation? I’m afraid I must call bullsh!t. They engaged her as a dancer for a performance. There is no law against that in North Carolina. At this very moment, there are hundreds of women engaged in that legal activity at this very moment. The only illegal activity that may have taken place that night was underage drinking. And that’s not for certain.

There was no thought by anyone at that party about engaging in sex with Crystal Mangum. To believe otherwise is to suspend belief.

Again, you show how little attention you’ve paid to the case.

Wow, I wish there were more African-Americans who thought like that!

I agree that there was no intercourse with either of the two girls. I agree that there was not even any serious stuff with sex toys, as there was some scuttlebutt about them being angry at the drunk “performance” and the fact that there were no sex toys, and that some clown volunteered a broomstick or coke bottle or something like that (it has been two years!). Then there was the confusion about what happened in the bathroom, but no one claims that sexual activity happened there.

It may be that you are right and that prostitution is limited to “carnal knowledge” of the person. If so, I am just wrong on that one. The last time I banged a hooker we didn’t play a sex game with the NC statutes book (just kidding!), so I don’t really know. I defer to your more comprehensive knowledge of the law. If there were no laws violated (underage drinking? who are we kidding here? it is a college campus!!!!), then no charges should be filed against the kids, and their punishment should be limited to people knowing they are smartass elitist little reprobate jerks. I wish NC criminal law was like civil law, in that the aggrieved party can recover legal costs if exonerated. I don’t know how that would work here, though, b/c the case was dismissed without ever going to trial. My interest in the case stopped with Roy Cooper’s press conference. Did he work out an agreement to not go after the state of NC? Rape is a state criminal offence. I know they are suing the city, Duke, and Nifong. Is the state of NC included?

You make a lot of assumptions as to how much I followed the case, but I will certainly yield to you on whether prostitution would include the kind of “performance” Ms. Mangum and her (equally chiseling) friend did. If it is legal, it is legal. I made an assumption about the law which is probably incorrect. Again, I yield to your knowledge of the issue. Personally, I don’t think pros should be state statute illegal anyway, but should remain up to the municipalities how they wish to deal with it. Same for smoking marijuana or most other rec drugs.

My comments were all intended to take a second look at who the REAL malefactors are here, and not just some drunk zoned out quasiliterate crackwhore. If she had not stumbled across one of the stupidest DA’s known to man, who was all heavy breathing to get that extra ..... was it 12,000 a year, or 20,000? — i can’t remember— in his retirement by just getting one election term, she would have probably done a night in the tank, had a black lawyer on the DA team ask her in the a.m. “are you sure you want to hang on to what you were saying about rape, honey? You were pretty drunk. We did those tests on you and although you have had sex, we WILL match the DNA with those guys and it could be bad for you if it turns out you are lying.” She recants, game over.
Now your property taxes (I assume you are a Durham resident too?) are going up, as the civil suits alone outstrip the Durham O&I coverage by almost 20 mil. Duke will get soaked, too, but they are endowed out the ying yang, and layered in insurance for these kinds of issues for 50 mil on the underlying and then another 50 or a hundred (they aren’t revealing exactly how much) in an umbrella. Nifong is has, of course, attempted to hide his assets, but these guys going after him are pretty sharp and will pick him clean, I am sure.

Crystal will get some royalties for her book and a couple thousand for the movie rights to play on whatever that womens’channel is. She will blow it, what isn’t stolen from her by the normal crowd of leeches, manipulators, lawyers, agents and hanger-ons that you see in stuff like this.

Again, my guess is she will be in jail for assault, drunkenness, dui, pros, or something within a year.
