There has always been speculation that it was Huey's bodyguard/guards who accidentally killed him and not Dr.Weiss.
If you've been to lobby in the rear of the state capitol in Baton Rouge where Long was shot, it's all marble (you can still put your fingers in the bullet marks) and the probability of ricochet is very high and I think that's at the root of the 'bodyguards shot him' scenario.
However, if you're looking for a juicy JFK-type conspiracy theory there's one that's plausible (at least to Oliver Stone): FDR.
Long was incredibly popular nationally and had a sophisticated communications network for the times. Long was a real threat to FDR reelection. FDR even read The Kinfish the riot act in a White House meeting. Redistribution of the wealth (mainly oil companies) was Long's platform, a mighty popular plank in 1935.
