Love your sarcasm. Love your cynicism. Admire your ability to see through the smoke. And, if I'm reading you right, I am as big a 'fool' as you, intending to vote for the republican ticket in November, yet fully aware that it will simply mean less pain, spread out over a longer period.

Thanks for sharing the wisdom, disguised as confusion. :)

joanie, can we not think it a form of encouragement from ALL the folks calling their congresscritterss and telling them ....no bail out!

Doesn't that sound like there are many who are willing to experience the effects-(of a Wall Street crash) on a personal level as long as it helps clean out this mess of greed/corruption?

I'm probably not making a lot of sense this AM....

..we had an all night prayer vigil at church-(to put any & all plans before God regarding whether to press on with building knowing the economy & our part in faith) and I'm oh so tired.

Our church folks are very aware of what may be coming down the pike....

Maybe the best we can ask for is to hold the line with McCain as a toehold, and then massive encirclement around him from DAY ONE to keep one of his pens, old or otherwise, from signing legislation or executive orders amnestying millions of these invaders and outsiders--he serves one term, and we coast back to full conservative mode with President Sarah Palin in January 2013 after she beats the pantsuit off of crusty Hilary. Obama aims to do the same thing as McCain on border sovereignty and "regularizacion". Really, that is where I see the greatest peril, and the Sunset (for America) so aptly represented in your photograph there.

I would love to see your scenario play out, AIT. But I think you are assuming too much power in 'our' hands. At this point, where I believe most Americans are showing an increased (any positive number is higher than zero) interest in politics/the election process, a few of our fellow citizens are beginning to notice the corruption. Post November 4th, the vast majority of the electorate will go back to focusing on being entertained and amassing creature comforts.

So 'keeping McCain's pens from signing any amnestry legislation' is going to be very difficult. There will be a handful of patriots pulling his hand away from the paper, and a small army of leftists pressing it toward the dotted line.

With that said, I hope your beautiful scenario has a chance of playing out. It's about all we have to hang onto.

It's a good start, but I think it needs to address an equally fundamental part of the crisis. A moral crisis.

People borrow money when they know they can't pay it back. That is immoral. People refinance with no intention of paying their mortgage. That is immoral. Our schools are wallowing in money, much more per capita that is 'necessary' yet DC, with over $13,000 per student being spent, produces a 33% reading/math proficiency. Parents are not teaching their own children, and teachers are not held accountable. That is immoral. People waste money on trinkets, luxuries, entertainment, and savings is ridiculously low, with people counting on government to bail them out. That is immoral.

Government is no longer the main problem, it's also a symptom. A symptom of more and more people who are, at their core, lazy greedy and immoral, and therefore elects politicians who will promise whatever, go with the flow, and not stand up for the Constitution, and limited government.

Henry Adams, descendant of two Presidents, wrote that no American dies in the country of his birth, meaning that in a lifetime the country changes into the unrecognizable. It seems that we all face that fate. There is little consolation in it but I don’t think we are going down alone. The whole globalized structure is likely to take a tumble. The maddening part is that we have been led into this debacle by fools and knaves.

Well said!

One of my sisters called me earlier in the week. She was fretting (to put it mildly) about the state of her personal finances as a result of this crisis, and wanted to solicit my advice. (She is completely clueless as regards investing. I am probably one small rung above clueless.) :)

After providing what advice I could, and recognizing that she was still in a state of panic, I simply said to her, 'You are not alone in this. There are three hundred million Americans facing the same wall, and billions around the world who will be affected as well.'

Your Adams quote, which I had never heard, is very profound in its implications. Thank you so much for sharing it.

When they come for our arms, it will not be time to bury them, but to dig them up and employ them.

Time to restart the House Un-American Activities Committee -- and this time have a firing squad standing ready.

Man! I had never thought about how appropriate that committee would be right now! Absolutely brilliant!

Yet we are going to have major difficulty even getting congress to investigate those involved in this fiasco (ain't gonna happen). To even consider attaching an 'un-American' label to any investigation would simply garner 'rightwing conspiracy' labels. Such is the sad state of affairs in America 2008.

Thanks for the excellent comments!

Don't apologize for your 'negativity'. Any pessimist in this situation is simply an informed realist. And there aren't enough of us to go around, which is precisely why we are in this state.

You covered all the bases in your response, and covered them extremely well. Thank you.

Every time I read that Lincoln quote I get a chill. It is indeed prophetic.

Our Founders, too, seemed to have a window into the future. Their writing is filled with stern warnings about the need to be informed and vigilant. I suppose that people who sacrifice so greatly for something are prone to extrapolate into areas in which that 'something' might be threatened by future passivity. God bless them, and God forgive us for what we have done with our precious inheritance.
