“The truth is that reformers like McCain tried to prevent this from happening, but the Democrats and a few Republicans opposed him, and now we have a disaster on our hands. This could be a make or break issue for McCain, and its up to him to set the record straight.
John McCain speaking to the Senate on May 25, 2005:
For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Macknown as Government-sponsored entities or GSEsand the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEOs report this week does nothing to ease these concerns.
In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEOs report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay.
I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.
I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation.”

Bush tried to fix this and so did McCain.
So of COURSE the Democrats blame them for what they themselves did.

You might discern that I have lost a substantial amount of retirement income in the last couple of days.Same here. I always thought they would do it via inflation though.

I think we should start sending letters directly to Bush, telling him that speaking out now - the "I told the Rats we were going to have problems but they ignored me so now the country is screwed" that he's avoided on so many fronts in the name of civility - has cost us our retirements, so exposing the rats NOW - would make things just a little better, knowing that it won't happen a second time if we ever manage to make that money back.
If he's got proof that he tried to rein in F&F, WTF is he standing there taking all the blame like some damn pinata?
