The gunsmith hired to inspect each weapon transferred will make sure each piece was returned in good condition and that there had been no tampering with any of them.

This is the smartest thing he could possibly have done.

I wouldn't put it past the LEOs to convert one or more of the stolen weapons to full auto and then come back at him later with another raid and send him to prison after making them look bad.

Because there's nothing quite so ardent as an ATF Agent with a hard-on for they consider a "gun queer".

Way back, when dirt was still new, and about 100lbs ago, I went to SRT training with an ATF guy who made a point of asking each of us how many guns we owned, and then calling each of us who owned more than 1 firearm, "gun queers".

Yet he was the only one who felt the need to carry a gun everywhere, and felt he "had to" sleep with it at arm's reach in a building full of SWAT officers.

I finally decided he was simply a city boy and just didn't know any better. Sure was a prick though.

The reason ATF was there, is that they investigate and monitor all Class 3 federal firearms license holders. Usually, if the locals or state police conduct a raid at a gun shop, the ATF will be there to assume federal jurisdiction on any license issue.

I also agree that they get a real kick out of being seen at raids. They are not the usual primary law enforcement agency during the investigation, but they sure like to get their faces on the TV.

Yeah, the training was just a few months before the ATF’s finest hour. Since we were in West Texas (Amarillo), and he was a localy assigned agent, I’m sure he was at Waco. Never saw him again, but if I do, I’ll have to ask him how many kids he killed.

Either one is well within the realm of high probability considering the recent history of law enforcement abuses chronicled here and elsewhere.

I’m glad this guy had the good sense to make the announcement he would be having the weapons checked public, so the cops and media would be on notice he was expecting shenanigans.
