Natural gas is always less expensive than electric. I’d vote for getting natural gas heat. Then, if you need to supplement the heat for specific areas of the house, you can add a small electric heater without doing grave damage to your electric bill.
Having had oil heat in a number of rural residences myself, I can say that gas is definitely clean and is also odor-free. You also don’t find yourself freezing to death because bad weather or a miscalculation made it impossible for you to get a delivery of fuel.
I’m complaining about the cost of natural gas because I have a very hard-to-heat house. It would be a lot worse with oil or electricity.
Northern Sabine Parish is around 13,000’ and southern is about 17,000’. Shell and Encana well in Section 26, 5N - 12W has Haynesville at 14,000’; completed this spring and is waiting on a gas plant.
That’s interesting,,,
The area I’m refering to is generally NW of Many by the lake
IIRC Sonnet went down 12,000’ and hit the shale at around
11,500’ or so,,,
Would that be a stripper? plant ?...
Shell has another well in that area (Olympia Minerals 26) that appears to have gone horizontal in the Haynesville at 12,895’. It is in 9N - 12 W. As far as the gas plant, either the gas has too much carbon dioxide or is too rich in liquids to go directly into the pipeline so it has to be treated. Do you mean Sonat (the old Southern Natural Gas) instead of Sonnet? They drilled some deep wells in the area to the south in the 1980’s.
Ok,,,got it on the gas plant,,,
I think your rite about “Sonat”,,,
More of my LouisianaBonics...LOL;0)
Have you leased yet? Going rate is about $15,000 per acre for 3-year lease and a quarter royalty. As they told James Dean in “Giant”, “You’re in the chips now, boy.”
I ain’t signed anything yet,,,
Those numbers are just about what I figured,,,
Still dickerin’ with Chesapeake’s landman,,,
All I’ve heard so far is “cow chips”...;0)
Just hang in there. With a few more good wells announced to the north in DeSoto and in Sabine Parish, they will come up with the cash.

That’s just what I’m doin’ at this point,,,
Petrohawk and 4-5 other drillers are also leasing in this
area,,,All I’ve got is time...;0)
Lake Worth/Boat Club area north of Ft. worth just signed for twice that! 30K bonus money.
Thanks. I’ve had oil so long I have no other reference point.
The great fear about the potential of the Haynesville Shale is that it is “too” big. It will drive down gas prices and companies like Chesapeake, Petrohawk, etc. will go south because they are leveraging themselves to acquire all of the acreage at sky-rocketing prices. Of course, storms like Katrina Part Two brewing in the Caribbean will help knock off offshore production.
