Poor Obama, somebody told him that conservation would reduce oil use by the same amount that drilling would increase supply; then he could only think of a couple of very minor ways to conserve oil.

“BTW if tire pressure will equal all possible domestic oil drilling why have I not heard of this solution or seen it enacted before?”

The messiah has spoken - and so it must be.

Since March I’ve inflated my tires in my Xterra to 40 psi, up from the 32 I used to keep. I haven’t noticed any difference in mpg.

How are you measuring MPG? A 1% chance in wheel diameter will reduce by 1% the odometer reading for traveling a given real distance.

The simpleton method of miles traveled divided by the number of gallons to fill up. I doubt inflating my tires from 32 psi to 40 psi will produce a 1% change in the tire diameter. PSI changes will exert pressure on all sides of the tire, not just on the side to expand the diameter.

Let’s suppose it did change. Instead of going 300 miles on 15 gallons of gas, I now go 303 miles on 15 gallons of gas. That produces and increase of .02 miles per gallon, hardly anything to brag about, and it certainly won’t produce a reduction in oil consumption like Obama fantasizes.

It's a little difficult to measure the effective "diameter" of a somewhat flat tire. There's a much bigger change going from 24 to 32 than from 32 to 40; the reduction in drag from 24 to 32 is also more significant. In either case, though, the increased effective diameter of the wheel at higher pressure will reduce the distance recorded on the odometer for each unit of real distance traveled, thus causing any efficiency improvement to appear smaller than it is.

On the other hand, under some road conditions, overinflated tires will produce more drag than optimally-inflated ones; unfortunately, the optimal level of inflation varies with road conditions. A 25psi tire may do a better job of 'smoothing out' bumps than a maximally-inflated tire. In the former case, parts of the tire will ride higher or lower to fit the contours of the bumps; in the latter case, the whole wheel will have to go up and down.

In most cars, 24 psi is underinflated and you will see a difference in airing up to the recommended psi. But, my recommended psi is 32, and airing up to 40 has not produced a difference for me. Most people I know take care of their cars well enough to keep their tires at the proper inflation, so again, I think Obama needs to stop reading the Yahoo suggestion articles when he logs off of his email account and using those suggestions in his speeches. He looks like an idiot, even to those of us who are not mechanics.

I do air down when I take my Xterra off road because of the point that you made-the tires conform to the rocks/ruts/trees and give me better traction. Airing down also increases the contact patch on the dirt and gives me more float in sand. I don’t worry about gas mileage off road!

I started a telecommute job a few weeks ago. I’ve gone from burning $100+ week to $25/week and am lovin’ it!”

Obviously, white collar jobs are the most likely to be telecommunicated.
I have advocated for years that we should work a 4 day-10 hour day. Alot of companies don’t need to be open 5 days a week. If we are talking retail, then still have employees work 4/10, and overlap as necessary.
Employees save 20 % of gas, lunches, and clothing expense.
If employers can be closed an extra day a week out of 5, then they save 20% on utilities, which right off the bat saves energy.

Did you not listen to the video?

I did listen, which is what caused me to conclude that editing took place because as I said, even Obama could not be that ignorant, or could he. Maybe he just thinks others are ignorant.
