A Sowell BTT. Good stuff all around this time. I have to differ with respect to baseball umpiring, though. Sure, we could automate balls and strikes but then we’d be depriving ourselves of the sight of managers shrieking at umps and kicking dirt on the plate. I don’t think Sowell’s thought that one through... ;-)
To: Billthedrill
Absolutely agree on the umpires, it’s part of the game. I was a Dodger fan for a lot of years when they moved to LA. I loved watching Lasorda go face to face with an umpire.

As a kid, I loved watching Tommy Lasorda mix it up as manager of the Spokane Indians (Dodgers' AAA team at the time).
Especially the night in '71 when Bobby Valentine took a high inside fastball on the cheekbone...yes, I know that dates me.

Yeah, I used to love to watch "Sweet" Lou Piniella hold forth like a four-year-old. He'd tear up a base now and then too. See, the thing with that is that it's a sort of passion play unto itself - you know how it's gonna turn out, the ump always wins, and there's a sort of restoration of cosmic order in it that ought to be the topic of a serious philosophical disquisition. Maybe Yogi Berra's already made one. Who could tell? ;-)

"Although most of the mainstream media are still swooning over Barack Obama, a few critics are calling the things he advocates "naive." But that assumes that he is trying to solve the country's problems. If he is trying to solve his own problem of getting elected, then he is telling the voters just what they want to hear. That is not naive but shrewd and cynical."
Obambi in a nutshell.

LOL! I think I dated myself too. I went to a few games at the LA Coliseum.

Don’t know about now but way back I’ll bet they had a beer together later after one of those frays.

While I would never accuse major league umpires and managers of, er, "theater," I did read about a particular exchange, which ran something like, "That was a great call, John! How's the wife doing?" snarls the manager, and the ump yells back "Fine. Kids are great. See you for dinner Sunday evening?" and throws him out of the game. Of course, both guys were red-faced and gesticulating, the fans were screaming, and the players nearby were trying their best not to break up.
It probably never happened... ;-)

Why can’t Thomas Sowell run for President? He’s way better in practically every way than either of the other major party candidates.

I’ve always wanted robots to automate officiating, since my enjoyment of basketball has everything to do with the performance, and nothing to do with managers screaming at refs.
Have a great day.

He “can’t win” because he’s not a “front runner”. See, I am a sheep, and only vote for people “who can win”. I don’t actually make up my own mind. I won’t risk either, ever.
We must vote for Senator Hairdo, or Congressman Treason, who “can fundraise” and “have support”. Better yet, Governor Icehole has sold us out for years, and thus has plenty of money. He’s our man!

Majority of the people work in SMALL companies yet the government bails out HUGE banks and cooperations all the time. It's ridiculous and YOU GET THE BILL!

Sowell has more “slave blood” than Obama and more wisdom than John McCain. He is also older than McCain, and is on record as considering McCain too old for the job.
