If he was vulnerable Jim Pederson would have gone for him instead of Kyl. McCain has never had a close election.

Pederson was chairman of the AZ Democratic party in 2004, not exactly a good place to seek election from. And as for McCain “never” having a close election, he’s only had 4 statewide elections. McCain was vulnerable, and is vulnerable, there just needs to be a real candidate against him. I don’t know if Obama is that guy, but there’s a large chunk of the AZ populace that just plain doesn’t like the guy, and with good reason.

Pederson was also Chair in 2005 when he stepped down to run against Kyl. He bought the chairmanship in order to seek a Senate seat. McCain wasn't vulnerable, Kyl was.

McCain has always won in a landslide (+10%).

Goldwater won his last election by around 5000 votes.

You can pound your chest all you want but McCain is vulnerable. Look at the primary results. Remember the recall. Remember the fact that he’s a no good first amendment burning gang of 14 organizing amnesty supporting SOB and if the GOP had run one candidate that didn’t suck he wouldn’t even have the nomination.

The facts just don't support you. Romney pulled 90% of the Mormon vote across the board, not just in Arizona. He ran strong in Eastern Arizona and in Mormon precincts. I don't blame the Mormons, they've got a good candidate but it pulled from McCain.

The recall attempt was a fart in a hurrricane. It was never going anywhere.

Yeh, Ask dittomom how well that recall was going; how people were just chasing her down to sign those petitions/sarcasm

I do a lot of walking and phoning in Sun City north of Tucson. Retirees but still very Republican (they’re retirees with money)

The recall probably never would have succeeded, for one thing AZ law doesn’t allow for senators to be recalled, but it’s a sign of dislike.

But remember he didn’t win that primary by a landslide. Sure every time he’s gone against a dem he’s won by a landslide, and that very well might hold in November. But his most recent statewide election is the primary, no landslide. And apparently he feels a need to campaign here, I’ll believe his people who seem to not think AZ is a lock.

It's the Constitution that does not allow for recall of federal officials, not state law. Both Kyl and McCain have signed pledges that if they were to lose a recall referendum, they would voluntarily step down.

As I pointed out, Romney won the Mormon block vote and that held McCain's total down. The Mormons have been heavy McCain supporters. It's hard to beat identity politics. If Romney is on the ticket with McCain, I would expect to see a blowout for him in the general. Either way, I would expect a 15% or more margin over Obama. Goldwater did not do that well in his Presidential run. In it he won Arizona by only 5000 votes over LBJ.

Yup. The vote might not have been legally binding because the Senate has declared that only they can eject one of their own, but McCain had pledged to stand by the results.

McCain recall drive formally begins
by jessehaff · Thursday February 15, 10:03 AM

Organizers of a recall drive in Arizona oppose McCain’s continued support of the Iraq war and for being complicit in the erosion of civil liberties associated with the war on terror. The recall was filed Tuesday by Americans for Integrity and Justice who stated: “... right now he seems to be just representing himself, he’s got tunnel-vision for the presidency.”

To force a statewide vote, the recall group must collect 381,696 valid signatures by June 13. McCain signed a pledge with the Secretary of State’s Office agreeing to resign immediately if defeated in a recall election. Read more details here.

Mothers Against Illegal Aliens commented 12 months ago:

No it was in 2001, a lot of it started here on FR, mostly over his early need to disagree with Bush about everything, including things McCain had previously held the same position as Bush. Then 9-11 happened and everybody decided it was not a time to fight amongst ourselves.

Are you an Arizonan, and did you have a different username at that time?

Am an Arizonan, and I would expect that most people on a second or higher FR account wouldn’t admit it.
