You basically suggested that Jacob Schiff is personally responsible for the USSR. A little bit, but not really. He managed a bank that loaned money to various countries that did all sorts of things with it. He does not deserve to be vilified. He had his reasons for loaning to the Bolsheviks, which were probably good, he died in 1920, he changed his mind before that, and he did not know the future. Kuhn Loeb must not have been the only bank they did business with. I never implied that antisemitism in Russia ended at the Revolution. I have been on this forum for several months.

"I thought her husband was a medical doctor."

He is. He also seems like a bit of an overachiever :)

I did not vilify the old devil. I did not suggest anything. I stated facts. Even his family admits he, personally, provided money to Lenin. I am not responsible for your inferences. I do, however, distrust the motives and judgment of some of his descendants, with their “Socialism for thee, capitalism for me” attitude. The reason I mentioned your tenure here is that you seem to be looking for offense when none is meant.

I don’t see how Jacob Schiff’s activities 90 or 100 years ago pertain to Karenna Schiff’s apartment sale. I find it unlikely that he personally loaned money. He would have loaned it through his bank. I am sure that neither of us knows much about the attitudes of his descendants, most of whom are or were private people. Dorothy Schiff, it is true, was a famous outspoken liberal, but she is an exception. Lisa and David Schiff, Andrew’s parents, are Republicans.

He didn’t loan Lenin money, he gave Lenin money. His company loaned money to the Bolsheviks. As I said before, I distrust the judgment of some of his descendants. Dorothy Schiff was another hypocritical lefty of the “Capitalism for me, socialism for thee” mindset that prevailed in New York at the time (and still prevails in many quarters. Ahem). Why do I somehow doubt Andrew Schiff is a Republican? And why do I have serious misgivings about Algore’s daughter’s agenda?
