You know, when I think vacation, I think of heavily polluted air and water, dingo tenderloin and totalitarian goons.

China is a great vacation spot. You deny yourself likley what would be the trip of a lifetime. Not during the Olympics. Too expensive. But afterwards will be an especially good time to travel to China.

Avoid the tours. They are not necessary. Just get your plane ticket, land in Shanghai or Beijing and set about to see the sites.

No need for a car. It is an incredibly easy city to travel without one; a car is a real liability to getting around.

Travel very light. Only have overnight bag. Buy what you need there, including a large suit case to bring it all back.

For example, they will typically exchange an expensive item with a cheap one when boxing or bagging a purchase for you.

And of course Americans and the rest of the world are too stupid and will fall for such tricks. I agree with you. Best to stay right here in the USA where no one will ever cheat you.
