Carter and Ford comes to mind.
re: “a nation of whiners”
Not the entire nation...... but we sure do have the Demagogues a “Party of Whiners” and then there are the leftist wankers of the MSM. So, yes, there is plenty of whining and snivelling, but let’s be accurate about where most of it is coming from.
Exactly right. What we’re seeing here would be called “selection error” in statistics.
Phil Gramm and FReepers watch the TV news and see the whiny victim of the week complaining. They watch the negative & whiny “news” reports from the liberal media. They read the whiny liberal columnists in the newspapers, as well as the whiny letters-to-the-editor.
Then, they surmise that all of America is a “nation of whiners”, forgetting that the majority of people in this country aren’t on the news or in the paper, they’re just out there trying to make a living.
Again, I say that arrogantly mocking the voting public is not a good plan for winning elections.
Sadly, this thread reads like one of the many “Americans are all idiots except for us DU’ers” threads that are so common on Democratic Underground.

Well, since the thread was about a REPUBLICAN blunder and not a Democratic one, it seems a reasonable distinction. The quote reinforces the stereotype that Republicans don’t care about middle-class Americans.
Mr. Gramm showed poor judgement with his comments. He’s been in politics for a long time, so he should have known the unscrupulous Democrats & media would take the quote out of context and use it to bash McCain.
“Mental recession”? “Nation of whiners”? Phil might as well have put on a powdered wig and said “Let them eat cake”. It would have been about as helpful to the Republican party.

LOL, cut the drama and save it for Oprah and the liberal MSM, it does not work for me.
Well, that will always be true to a certain extent... because there are more dim wits in their party than ours. :-) I think saying stupid things and especially doing immoral things may hurt candidates with Republican leaning voters a lot more than with Democrat leaning voters. So McCain really needs to be a lot more careful about letting his people say things that may insult socially conservative voters like seeming to lump them in with liberal whiners.
LOL Again, thanks for sharing your deep thoughts.
Since you don’t seem capable of contributing anything other than snarky comments, I’ll be more than glad to ignore you.

You are exactly right!......Except that the dems are GENIUS at making the average American think that it's the Republican's fault (with the media's help, of course)!
Are the democrats getting the blame that they rightfully deserve? Of course not! Has Phil Gramm been in politics long enough to know how his words would be taken out of context and exploited by Barack Obama? Of course he has!
It doesn't matter whether we are "technically" in a recession or not - what matters is that most people FEEL like we are! This does happen every election cycle when we have an incumbent Republican - I would think that the GOP would be ready and prepared to counter this kind of crap - but no!!! They just stand there like deer in the headlights and go on about their impotent way.
The Republicans blew the opportunity they had & they are blowing it again. They truly do not deserve to win this election - they have been so incredibly incompetent! The trouble is that the American people do not deserve to suffer the consequences...........OR DO THEY???
They keep voting for these people over and over & thinking things are going to be different THIS time. We all know what that is the definition of.
