On to promote his new movie "Hancock," Will Smith was pushed by "Today" co-host Matt Lauer to express his support for Barack Obama and the actor/rapper, channeled his inner Michelle Obama, as he declared it's the "first time" in five to 10 years it's been good to be an American overseas [audio available here]:
WILL SMITH: You know I just, I just came back from Moscow, Berlin, London and Paris and it's the first, I've been there quite a few times in the past five to 10 years. And it just hasn't been a good thing to be American. And this is the first time, since Barack has gotten the nomination, that it, it was a good thing.
The following is an excerpt from the interview as it occurred on the June 22, "Today" show:
MATT LAUER: Let me get you on the record on politics here, okay? It's been-
WILL SMITH: No.
LAUER: Yeah, please.
(laughter)
LAUER: It's been, you basically come out and said, "Look what I have to do to help Barack Obama win, I'll do." You know, "Call on me."
SMITH: Absolutely.
LAUER: Has he called on you and are, are you supporting Barack Obama 'cause you would've supported anybody the Democrats put forward or that you just think he's the man?
SMITH: You know I just, I just came back from Moscow, Berlin, London and Paris and it's the first, I've been there quite a few times in the past five to 10 years. And it just hasn't been a good thing to be American. And this is the first time, since Barack has gotten the nomination, that it, it was a good thing. You know the-
LAUER: Do you think people can't get behind America led by John McCain?
SMITH: You know I just, there, there are, there are certain ideas that I believe Barack stands for that are fundamental that the forefathers of this country wrote down on paper that we're all supposed to pay attention to, we're not supposed to ignore it and do what we want to do 'cause we have different ideas. And I believe just at his core the, that those ideas just they, they just come of his pores. And I'm, I'm excited to support him.
LAUER: And so the question everybody gets right now, if he calls you and wants you to be his Vice President you will?
SMITH: I will, and you know, I mean, I, I, I love this country and I'll do what I have to do. You know so, if I, if I have to run, you know, America really has an ear fetish. So I think I definitely have the ears for, Barack and I, we could do it.
And once again, a blank canvass upon which someone else paints a character shows his true depth.
Actors, empty containers waiting to be filled with whatever crap happens to fall in.
Well, by all means I think we should make sure that whoever we elect President of the United States of America is approved by the people living in Moscow, Berlin, London and Paris...
< don’t make me flog you with a sarcasm tag >
Yeah, I can’t support him on that one. He has definitely been seduced by the dark side (no pun intended).
Was it all about race when Chuck Norris campaigned for Huckabee? Will was asked a question and he answered it. Despite what the misleading headline implies by not providing the full quote, the man said he loves his country. You don't have to agree with his politics, unless of course you believe it was racist for Chuck Norris to campaign for Huckabee.
“there are certain ideas that I believe Barack stands for that are fundamental that the forefathers of this country wrote down on paper that we’re all supposed to pay attention to, we’re not supposed to ignore it and do what we want to do ‘cause we have different ideas”
Hmm. Coulda fooled me. I didn’t know the founders were socialists.
I LOVE Will Smith. Think he’s funny and an excellent actor.
Until my kids started watching reruns of Fresh Prince and how much they made fun of Carlton for ‘acting white’ as if being white were a bad thing.
Of course they also made fun of some of the ridiculous urban stuff too. Like overexagerating the moves and sideswipe hat and stuff.
But still, I have to remind my kids, being white isn’t a bad thing, even though they have some black in them. I don’t want them to think that the white part is bad. That’s what make me so mad about Obama. He is the first “Black President’, what about his exactly one half White side? THAT is the part that supposedly makes him an American!
From Faded Youth blog:
“Saturday Night Live may have stuggled to figure out who should play Barack Obama in skits, but the Democratic frontrunner knows exactly who he thinks could play him in a movie.
Will Smith and I have talked about this, because he has the ears, Obama tells Entertainment Tonight. Hes better looking than me, but we both have those.
Perfect casting!!!”

I’ve never liked his ghetto schtick. He’s picked some enjoyable movies to star in, but they would have been more enjoyable with somebody else in the role.
I personally don't give a damn about America bashing overseas..... and I think most Americans feel the same way. I'm more worried about America bashing here at home. And Will Smith supports a guy that blames America for EVERYTHING! They love Obama because he bashes us more than they do.
I always thought highly of you... bought your movies and enjoyed your acting. I will never AGAIN buy anything that you are associated with... you are an un-American POS actor that is as dumb as the false messiah (osamalamadingdong) that you worship!
LLS
People all over the world would love to move to the US.
Guess I’ll skip Hancock. Can’t these buffoons manage to say something positive about their messiah without tearing down the country?
People all over the world also love to bash the U.S. I’m surprised U.S. bashing wasn’t announced as a new Olympic sport.
Oh yeah, he must mean this line by Jefferson:
When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for people to elect a black marxist.
Yes, other countries that hate America seem to love Obama. Totally shocking....
Depends on your definition of "bomb." I Am Legend, or as I call it, The Last Man On Erf set a opening weekend record and grossed respectably. However, I found the special effects terrible, the plot thin, and the prospect of Will Smith being a doctor specializing in virology utterly preposterous.
Yep, America was so bad to Will Smith. I wonder how he survived - physically, economically and mentally!
Well take that last one off; he did not make it mentally...
