Every once in a while we hear about the so-called
gay gene and occasionally somebody brings up the abortion issue in regards to the so-called
gay gene. That is, they say abortions will increase when or if a
gay gene is found in the womb.
But that will never happen because study after study after study demonstrates that environment is key. And if environment is key, and it is, then there is nothing in genetics that causes same-sex attraction.
Then why do some people act or look gay? Our culture helps mold them that way by encouraging what we consider gay behavior. It's really quite complicated.
A page that is updated a couple of times a year helps to explain the complexity. You can read the page here: How Might Homosexuality Develop? Putting the Pieces Together

Are they really confused? Some of them definitely know what they prefer. It may not be what we want, but they know it.

I think the term
confused is an accurate description. It may not seem like a nice or politically correct term, but accurate... probably. I say that because I've talked with ex-gays and that's the term they use. Also, the ex-gay interviews and videos I've watched use the same term.
Our sexuality is indeed quite complicated.

Of course there are gays who say they know what they are; I’m not disputing that fact. But they are a truly tiny percentage of the population as a whole.
Bisexuals and persons seduced at an early age into a gay lifestyle are, I believe, a much larger group than those who are truly homosexual, and make-up the ranks of those ultimately choosing a heterosexual lifestyle.
