In one large drainage pipe, a dozen Mexican men were plotting their next attempt to cruzar la linea. From where they sat, they could see Border Patrol agents waiting in their white utility vehicles at regular intervals along the ridge across the fence, while bulldozers cleared the last remaining vegetation on the U.S. side. For an outsider, it was hard to imagine how anyone could cross here undetected.
But Jose Luis Ortega, the apparent leader of the group, said they were going to try again, for the fourth time that week. The 23-year-old slightly-built Mexican with shoulder-length hair had worked for five years as a construction worker in Temecula, a bedroom community half way between San Diego and Los Angeles. Nine months earlier, he had returned to visit his family in his home town of Tecate, a border town better known for its export of beer than migrants.
When he and his fellow travelers tried to return to the U.S. the previous week, they were apprehended three times by the Border Patrol, who put them on a bus and took them back to Tijuana. Each time they tried again to cross. Ortega said they were going to stay try for another week. And if they don’t make it? “We’ll head towards Mexicali, and try to cross there,” he explained, referring to the border town 150 miles to the east which has become a favorite crossing point for increasing numbers of migrants.
Really! The women is struggling for her life after being shot in front of/near her two little boys, and she’s a money grubbing crack addict all of a sudden.

Honestly, what is wrong with some people on here? This woman gets shot 13 times by this man, and all you can say is some nasty comment about this man giving her money, then she shoves it in the crack-pipe. (good grief!)
I hope you’re joking. The man was armed and dangerous. She goes to the house, drops the kids off to him, they have an argument, he shoots her 13 times, takes the children and goes to Mexico! Did it say anything in the article about her demanding money and getting it? This is horrible, nothing to joke about!
If he is so helpless, why did he take a gun, shoot her, then take the kids and go? DUH! I’m sorry. Unless you have a strange sense of humor, and I’m missing something, this doesn’t seem to be some poor, helpless soul who’s being forced to pay her money to buy crack with!

The children’s surname is the same as the father’s.
But yes, I’m also sick of so much of the most violent crimes in SoCal are Hispanic. There is a sub-culture within Hispanics that is built on criminal behavior and they are proud of it.
I live in Bakersfield (Central Valley) and if you watch the nightly local news and wasn’t familiar with the place, you would swear that no white people live here anymore. Of course, it is getting close to that.
Latest: Ortega abandoned the Ford pickup in Antelope Valley overnight,... LAPD spoke with him on his cell at one point... no word on condition of mother.

The Nevada Highway Patrol has canceled an AMBER Alert for two missing Southern California children, but the whereabouts of the two youths and their father remain unknown. The AMBER Alert was issued by the NHP on Sunday afternoon, just hours after three-year-old Luis Ortega and his five-year-old brother Diego were allegedly abducted. Los Angeles County Sheriff spokesperson Byron Ward says 27-year-old Jose Ortega allegedly shot his estranged wife in Sunland, California. The woman is in serious but stable condition. Police say Ortega fled with the boys in a pickup truck that was later found abandoned. Authorities now fear Ortega may have fled to Mexico.
Last night, they were thinking he might head to Vegas if not to Mexico (see my post upthread). Reportedly, during his cell phone conversation with police, he affirmed that the boys are with him and “okay.” But, who knows?
Yeah, the truck was found in Lancaster.
Now, his vehicle and/or mode of transport is unknown.
Mexico seems a likely destination.
Poor children, this really makes me angry.

News just mentioned that the truck was abandoned in a “desolate” area. I’m thinking he would need an accomplice in another vehicle to pick up him and the kids at that point. His mother is pleading for him to turn himself in or at least turn the kids over to her.
