Elected officials are held to a higher standard of law than workaday citizens-—b/c the elected have the power of the purse.
CASE IN POINT: Democrat US Sen Harrison Williams went to jail for taking a gift of titanium stock——the overriding issue being that he might “return the favor.”
Ordinary citizens receive gifts without repercussions.
