Amish can vote like anyone else. Whether they do or not is up to them. The laws were made by the duly elected representatives of the people.

Perhaps some research by you on this would enlighten your position. Have you EVER seen a buggy outside your polling place? Ever seen 'plain folk' in line with you waiting to vote? Nope - they do not participate in these 'worldly' endeavors. They don't believe in government welfare, social security, public schools, suing others, or a whole myriad of other things that the 'English' voted for.

I was hoping to see more responses to this post along the lines of #14 by pierrem15 or some of the others who understood the principles working here. It is something along the lines of: They came against the Jews, and I did nothing for I wasn't Jewish - They came against the Mormons, and I did nothing for I wasn't a Mormon - They came against the Catholics, and I did nothing for I wasn't Catholic - They came against the Amish, and I did nothing for I wasn't Amish - - - Then they came for me, and there was nobody there to help.

As a Nation, we have 'Representatives' of the citizens who have passed a plethora of 'laws' covering anything you can imagine, and quite a few that you could not even imagine. So many, in fact, that they are 'selectively' enforced and basically anyone could be arrested anytime for some violation of a law that you may or may not have ever heard of. Sorry if this makes anyone feel 'dumped' upon, but as I see our Country having imprisoned more of the citizens than any other nation in the world - and it continues to grow, then I see some of the things like this that we put people in jail for.....

I could go on here for hours with bone-headed things that our 'experts' insist on imposing on others and our 'representatives' then enforce on us all but would it matter?

This is the United States. If they want heard, they vote. If they refuse to participate in this country’s process as responsible citizens then they can just shut the Hell up.

What is the difference in dumping human waste on a field or dumping horse, cow, pig, or chicken waste on a field?

Post #14 pretty much clears up the legal issue. The health issue seems moot as well.

I live out here in Amish land. These are some of the most “responsible citizens” I know, as in taking responsibility for their lives, property, financial, etc. dealings.

democracy and representative government

Since you're being pedantic, let me have a go. "Democracy" and "representative government" are a contradiction in terms. The Founders of this Republic went though a great deal of trouble to ensure that the government of the United States would not be a democracy, nor that it would ever be perverted into a democracy. They knew that democracies don't work.

You can be sure this wouldn’t be an issue if the “perpetrators” were fundamentalist Muslims.

Who cares? They must live by the same laws we do. If they don’t like the laws then they should participate in their making. Since they refuse, then they will suffer with the rest of us. They don’t get to act like they are not Americans subject to all laws any American is subject.

Part of the Freedom we enjoy should be a Freedom from having to worry that our neighbors are going to use government force to drive us out.

That you seem to approve of this miscarriage of justice speaks volumes about you.

None of it good...

I can hardly believe you are actually trying to defend your pro-tyranny position.

And yes, that is the correct term.

I’ve met enough Amish to know they’re not all angels. Try to impress upon one of ‘em the concept of private property during hunting season. Oh, they understand rules and regulations when it benefits them. When it concerns the other side of the fence “We don’t participate in such rules and regulations. They are of the world. We are not”

I care.

I live in Hampshire County, WV. The County fathers decided to instill a local building code just two years ago. They chose to name the INTERNATIONAL building code as our tome. It is a socialists dream!

OTOH, Berkeley County just had a vote and threw out the proposed ZONING ordinance. Seems that some locals found out what a socialists dream that has become.

I note your screen ID is CodeToad. It seems to fit just fine.

Hmmm, let me see - a woman votes 17 times AFTER SHE DIES...

Michigan voters have their primary votes 'switched' to a candidate they didn't vote for...

U.S. Military absentee ballots 'disqualified' in elections...

Does participation matter?

Oh, this is that area of Pennsylvania where their Congressional Representative declared the U.S. Army Soldiers to be criminals and murderers - even though the evidence in courts proved them innocent.

This is NOT the United States I grew up in - or served in the Military for - and tried to improve on for the past 7 decades!

Listen, idiot, try your childish personal attacks all you want but the fact remains that the Amish are not exempt from the law and if they don’t like the law then they can participate to change it. Refusing to participate then bitching like a little child is no way to go through life.

Pro-Tyranny? Well, when you grow up you can change it, until then, go out and take over the world while you still know everything.

And you think allowing an entire sector of people to refuse to participate helps those matters? You think that because things are aweful that we should just give up and stop holding people accountable for their participation? Since that seems to be your attitude, why are you here on this web site? This site is about people loving this country and wanting to make it better, yet, you sit there thinking we should give the Amish a pass on pariticpation and enforcement of the law because the system is broken. Since you have given up, just stop posting.

...remains!

...the Amish are not exempt from the law...

I think the courts will disagree, after this is appealed. You appear to be on the side of the socialists, or do you just play one on FR?

Most "code" enforcement/infringement, comes as a result of unelected "officials" making "rules". Unfortunately for you. and those of your opinion, the Constitution guarantees their rights. There has to be a proven harm to someone, before this action can be upheld.

Besides, it's more about taking their money, than providing them with services...and that is where our modern gum't excels!
