Are you trying to prove my point?

Back then, the left tried to claim him.
He didn't want to be claimed, though his lyrics were very liberal. He remained supposedly neutral, didn't want to be a prophet, etc.

Then “50” years after his lyrics, wherever you got that number from, he still claims he just wants to be known as a musician.

When he finally comes out with a political statement, he says that one of the most radically Leftist politicians in the last 20 years will bring some good change.

That sounds like a liberal to me, not a Reagan-style conservative. Not a Fred Thompson or Duncan Hunter supporter. Not a mature man who finally sees the absurdities and destructiveness of Socialism, but someone who wants to see other people's wealth redistributed for the “good of the poor.” Not someone who truly realizes the evil of those who want to destroy America, but someone who wants to improve the image of America by bending down on our knees and doing what the rest of the world wants us to do. Obama stands for these. Dylan could have criticized him as saying these ideas have been tried by Carter and didn't work. But no, he says Obama is bringing good change.

So, thanks for posting the interview. It helps to prove my point that Dylan is not a conservative, that he is, if anything, a liberal. And the worst kind of liberal, the wealthy hypocrite who still thinks fully embracing Socialism (communism-lite) may be a good change for America.

why then why did he endorse Obama?

Where does he specifically "endorse" Obama?

That is the writer's interpretation of the words. Admittedly it is a logical interpretation, but as many others have said here, the endorsement is rather weak.

wherever you got that number from,

From this:

Now I'm a liberal up to a degree
I want everyone to be free
But if you think I'll let Barry Goldwater...

That song "I shall be free" is from an album that was released in '63 or '64, which was actually 44-45 years ago, my mistake.

It helps to prove my point

Only if you are not paying attention, as the quote in bold implies.

As long as you are going to quote one of his worse songs ever, one full of many vapid, meaningless lyrics, you might want to consider this part of the song:

Now I gotta friend who spends his life
Stabbing my picture with a bowie-knife
Dreams of strangling me with a scarf
When my name comes up he pretends to barf.
I've got a million friends!

The man made a fortune by writing songs about social causes from the liberal point of view. Then he wonders why the left tried to claim him and set him up on a pedestal as their spokesman.

And now you come along and try to pretend he’s not a liberal.

Brilliant.

I’m still going through the Dylan lyrics on the web trying to find one that supports a single conservative cause.

It's not exactly an endorsement, but I'm disappointed he mentions Bambi at all. Wake up Bob -- he's worse than a politician; he's a politician with a Messiah complex!

I suspect Bob will be regretting his words.

Several points:

1. Previously I posed the question: "Are you the same person now that you were at age 21?" At 19 I voted for McGovern, at 23 I voted for Carter. I grew up, I changed, I educated myself and I started looking at life objectively. Today I am a Republican.

Is it possible that Dylan went through a similar change?

2. Part of the reason I posted the quote that I did was Dylan clearly states that his lyrics are misunderstood. He chooses not to explain them.

3. Consider this also: When he was 19-26 his "formative years" (musically), he fell into a crowd of liberals, had his share of fun, went with the flow, made money, wrote songs from which he could make money, all because it was fairly easy to do so. That was 40+ years ago. Condemn him of you will for youthful indiscretions, condemn him for "selling" out to make money, but I believe and others have confirmed, that none of us really know him.

I strongly believe that Dylan chooses to let people think what they will of his politics, possibly even encourages this in some ways because if he allowed his true feelings to show or be exposed he would be condemned by the left for more then he was condemned for going electric at Newport.

He chooses to profit from this persona, I have no real problem with that though I disagree with that approach.

Dylan is a money maker, first and foremost.

And making in money is bad now?

My, what has happened to FR??
