Rescorla felt it was foolish to rely on first responders to save his employees. His company was the largest tenant in the Trade Center, a village nestled in the clouds. Morgan Stanley's employees would need to take care of one another. He ordered them not to listen to any instructions from the Port Authority in a real emergency. In his eyes, it had lost all legitimacy after it failed to respond to his 1990 warnings. And so Rescorla started running the entire company through his own frequent, surprise fire drills. He trained employees to meet in the hallway between the stairwells and go down the stairs, two by two, to the 44th floor.

I used to work in a mid-rise building. We had fire drills. Periodically, the fire alarm would go off, and the fire marshall would come on the loud speaker, indicating that it was NOT a drill, but we were to stay at our desks.

I NEVER DID THAT, but immediately headed for the fire escape because, I always knew that I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR MY OWN SURVIVAL.

It’s why those who’ve served in the military, or the police, or the fire brigade - or any other disciplined service - tend to survive disasters better than those who haven’t. And also why they tend to save lives.

Because we’ve learned to act. To respond.

Other people can learn this lesson too - but it’s drummed into us.

Evaluate quickly - then do something.

BINGO DING DING We have a winner. When seconds counted 911 was minutes away plus Morgan Stanley was blessed with a MAN. A LEADER WHO LED FROM THE FRONT IN THE CLASSICAL MOULD OF JOSHUA CHAMBERLAIN OR LEONIDAS. One of the few who rise to to the occasion and say FOLLOW ME.

Given the prospects for strong leadership in this country, I guess this is a timely piece.

Right. That's formerly known as presence of mind, now called situational awareness. Whatever it's called, it's important that you become always aware of your surroundings, keeping an eye out for exits, entrances, people, the ambiance of a place, the normalness of a place, and what is different.

Practice it. You can become quite good at it.

Exactly right. When entering a new location, not only do I take note of where the bathrooms are, but where and what my emergency escape routes are.

One very detailed memory stands out at me. An all female conference in San Francisco, Shirley Temple Black was the speaker. All of us seated at long tables. Behind us humongous windows. The earth moved. I was under that table lickety-split. I was the only one, and when the tremor had passed, everyone got a good chuckle observing me crawl out from under the table. All I could think was "what were these women not thinking when the earth began moving?"

Flashbulb memory event for me.

Yup. I was visiting Paris with my wife back in 1994. This was during the Paris Metro bombings by the Algerians and we were, of course, under the Clinton administrations do nothing on terrorism policy.

Anyway we were in the subway (Metro) deep underground when we started to choke and cough. All at once I heard some French cops start to yell “Alors, alors!” and run up the down escalators. Gas!

I grabbed my wife and ran after the cops. When we reached the first flight a sergeant made them go back down. It was only mace. Someone had opened up a can of mace.

Still, I wasn’t taking any chances. Those cops looked scared, and I figured being French and all, they knew were to go to safety!

Thank you for the ping, Aloha Ronnie!

Isn’t it amazing that the first accounts on TV of the dead from the WTC on 9/11 were over 6,000. It wasn’t until Morgan Stanley employees came forward that the number of dead was reduced.

May heaven hold a special place for Cecil “Rick” Rescorla, a soldier once, and young.

AR you didn’t ping me!

What a great story about RICK RESCORLA. Much honor to this man who rode into the Valley of Death many years ago.

In this time of danger, can Time Magazine connect the dots? Can the American people connect the dots?

Boy Scout Motto: “Be Prepared.”

HERO

A little clutch of veterans share a table in a bar,

There’s a guy off in the corner coaxing tunes from his guitar.

They watch the Hudson River as it rolls towards the bend

And they talk of Rick Rescorla as a comrade and a friend.

While out across the water, many ocean-miles away

Within a Cornish Tavern by a sandy Cornish Bay,

Another group are gathered, reminiscing as a clan,

And their thoughts are all of Tammy, from the schoolboy to the man.

And every head among them has a picture in its mind

Which time and place and memory have captured and consigned,

Now the pictures weld together until only one remains,

Of a sturdy, selfless hero guiding others from the flames.

It’s a picture which unites them in their glory and their grief,

More eloquent than eulogies, confirming their belief

That theirs had been a privilege to saunter at his side

And in the way he’d lived his life had Rick Rescorla died.

The veterans recalled him in the killing fields of war

As a man whose potent presence would inspire and reassure,

Just one among his brothers when the skies began to fall,

Yet one whom they regarded as a father to them all.

And now their eyes will moisten at the mention of his name

And the sources and the substance of the legend he became,

When mayhem drove the best of men to crave their mother’s love,

He’d stand and croon an anthem to the gory gods above.

And on that evil morning, so deceptively serene,

Amid another carnage, just as callous and obscene

Again he took the mantle of the sainted and the strong

To save the lives of others with a blessing and a song.

Between the Hudson River and the sandy shores of Hayle,

Though eyes encompass differences of latitude and scale,

All hands are linked together in the testament they bear,

They are but Rick Rescorla’s friends, united by a prayer.
