The problem is that the military is fighting the perception that we are "crusaders" seeking to impose Christianity upon their population. That is the claim made by every demagogue on the region in the past 20 years from Adaid in Somolia to bin Laden to al Sadr.

Right now, we have tenuous gains in security in al Anbar and Mosul because Sunni leaders saw the brutality of al Qaeda contrasted with the respect and help of American soldiers. Al Qaeda killed Sunnis; the US built schools. Their support would evaporate immediately, however, if it turned into a war of Christians against Muslims. The surge worked because the Sunnis decided that al Qaeda was worse than us. Missionary soldiers will drastically change that perception.

Gen. Order #1 leaves no wriggle room. You can bring on as much religious material as you like for yourself and fellow soldiers, but anything intended to appeal to the Iraqi people is forbidden. Any soldiers unwilling to obey that order should seriously reconsider whether they should wear the uniform.

"there are no atheists in foxholes."

I believe that slogan relates to the effect that intense fear can have on a person's resistance to the Lord.

61: Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

62: Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

63: There laid they Jesus,

64: And rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

End of the Jefferson Bible.

Christianity is not “anti-Islamic material.”

Not by any stretch of the imagination.

And if a soul is saved through such contraband, could we say that the Lord had voted on such an interpretation of Gen Order #1?

You said there were no angels in Jefferson’s Bible, and yet there are angels. There is also God and Judgement and the Kingdom of Heaven. So you don’t know what your talking about. Period.

I can certainly agree with your assessment. And I agree that in private I see no problem if he is discussing religion with an Iraqi acquaintance, police, interpreter or whatever.

In uniform, on mission in the populace is no place to do it.

We fight along side of Muslims against the terrorists

The enemy is islam. They believe the enemy of their enemy is their friend.

You don’t see them fighting against the Hezzies or Hamas in Gaza or Lebanon do you?

The Iraqis are using US. The Iraqi leadership has said repeatedly that they will not allow an attack against Iran from Iraq by U.S. Forces.

With all of the hundreds of millions of moslems in the world there should be 10 divisions of them patrolling the streets of Iraq ALONG SIDE US. But there aren’t.

Where are they?
Show me a division of Saudi or Jordanian or Turkish or Pakistani combat troops doing bullet magnet duty with our troops.

islam is the enemy DESTROY THE ENEMY

Thank you for your post. I just didn’t have the time/patience to respond to that “very interesting and telling” point of view.

Okay. So I am a deeply confused individual.

I am in good company.

Nearly every single Marine in that guy’s outfit and on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq are going to agree with me as well. Add to that nearly every single officer and Department of Defense official all the way up the chain of command to the President of the United States. They are all going to agree with me, because they most certainly are not going to agree with morons like you (and that is an insult to morons) who seem to think that juggling grenades and throwing gasoline on fires in the name of God is great fun.

You have never spent a day in uniform, have you? Have you? If you had, you would know that evangelism is NOT the job of the US military. And you would know that once you enlist you surrender the option of doing that kind of thing if it runs counter to the mission and is expressly forbidden WHICH IT IS. Not that it needs to be spelled out the the troops over there, they are intelligent enough (unlike you, apparently) to see the logic in not trying to jack up the religious fervor over there in any way.

You gutless wonder. You think this is a great idea to have our Marines and Soldiers walk among the populace on patrol over there trying to convert them to Christianity because your shrivelled ass is safe at home in your warm comfy house.

If you think it is such a great idea, put your money where your worthless mouth is and YOU go over there and open up a mission. Yeah, I thought so. You’re a big mouth on the Internet as long as someone else is doing the heavy lifting. They have a phrase that describes people like you aptly: “No Load”.

This nation was founded by people who CAME here to escape the religious persecution that was rampant in Europe. Never heard of the Pilgrims, did you? Never mind they turned out to be as theocratic as you want us to be, and the only thing that kept them from turning into the Taliban was the fact that they never heard of them.

You want to start your theocracy, lets take a vote. Let’s count hands in this country and see who wants to live under your type of government and who wants to live under mine. I lose, and I stay here to get the government I deserve. You lose, you go to Iran.

Just get your black turban ready, loser, because that is what you would be.

That’s a bit extreme.

I lost all that I love to muslim invaders, and even I don’t hold such views.

You need more subtlety in your worldview perhaps.

heh heh heh

I seem to missplace it when I see fathers stomping their daughters to death because the DAUGHTER was raped

or

watching the sawing off of heads

or even Iraqi people being given the opportunity to create a new constitution and then mandating in it

NO LAW SHALL CONTRADICT ISLAM.

These are known things, my people have suffered from the effects of Islam the past 1000 years. Still, they are not all messed in the head, there are good people out there as well.

Until your people get rid of islam, they will share the misfortune of the “good” people in Germany and Japan in WW2... people who were controlled by ideologies of Nazis, and Tojoism.

Respectfully, sir, I agree that it is not anti-islamic to us.

But it IS anti-Islamic to the people who mean to do our men harm. That’s my opinion. I simply think their jobs are tough enough without making them tougher and more dangerous.

No.

Until the moderates among my people learn to get along with the moderates of Islam, exchange goods, services, forget the past, we’ll perpetuate the threat.

We’ve been trying to get rid of Islam for 1000 years. Never worked.

Anyway, your government has always supported theirs over ours, so your words are quite empty and don’t reflect reality.

You know, this thread (and this communication with you) has made more angry about something than nearly any other thread I have ever been on.

So I went back to read this thread carefully from the beginning to see where it jumped the track. Then I thought, you know what, makes no difference. I hate communicating with people in this tone, whether online or in person.

This is not common for me, neither is it enjoyable. It isn’t what I come to FR for. So I’m retracting all the insults.

It seems the Iraqis don’t have a problem with all the hundreds of BILLIONS of CHRISTIAN dollars we have given and continue to give them.
All those dollars have a big fat picture of a.... CHRISTIAN AMERICAN right in the middle of them.

No one asked you to be there or to give billions. You are there in self-defense of the United States, NOT for the Iraqis. Don’t complain about it.

I agree with the other poster. We are in Iraq for our own self interests and defense.

A good way to think about it is to ask yourself the question: “If not for 9/11, would we be in Iraq or Afghanistan right now.”

In my opinion, the answer is No.
