Ethanol has the effect of being an anti-freeze because of the alcohol.

Ethanol is diffcult to use as a motor fuel in cold climates because it doesn’t ignite well at low temps.

Also, because it absorbs water, it cannot be piped through much of the existing pipeline system.

Petroleum products float on top of the condensation in the pipelines and are largely unaffected by it.

Ethanol also presents corrosion problems for the existing pipelines.

Dedicated ethanol pipelines will likely be needed.
