Some parents are simply rude.
“suffer the little children to come unto Me...”
Well, thank goodness that I’m only 5’11” and 180lbs.
A true apostle of Christ would have exorcised the demons from this child.
“How can this young man be taking Holy Communion? You can only receive Holy Communion if you are capable of understanding the meaning. He never would have been able to complete the education that precedes receiving the first Holy Communion.”
Excellent question! Are any of our Catholic FRiends able to answer this for us? (I am not Catholic - I am a Mormon gal who has a great love and respect for Catholics.)
Um, he weighs 225 and urinates in church. Perhaps those are the variables that make him less than welcome. It is, unfortunately, NOT all about HIS needs, actually; the needs of the community at large also need to figure in.
Seems I’m not the only one that has the thought that perhaps this “child” should be kept at home.
hahah, I like your suggestion.
Yeah, but what’s your best distance in the fluid toss medley?
Thank you....
Sounds to me like he’s more in need of an exorcism than communion.
Yeh, altura, and just think — if it bugs you (and me) when cell phones ring, just think how you might feel if this ‘kid’ takes a leak on your foot. Sounds pretty reverential to me.
I would not take kindly to being ‘educated’ in this situation; I think the mom needs to be, big-time. Good for the adults in church leadership setting boundaries.
where are all these mormons coming from?
Utah?
Oh.
I feel bad for the mother but I think I have about all the “education and understanding about autism” I need for this situation.
_________
Please do not think that Adam Race’s behavior is typical of autistic people. No, his family shouldn’t take him to church services when he is so incapable of controlling himself, but I know at least five people in my church on the autistic spectrum including my own son, and their behavior is nothing of the kind.
God help the Race family, because they have been given great hardship in this life. Their troubles make my family’s seem easy.
Very sad case.
You brought it up, so I want to know why you said he was taking Holy Communion. I thought you knew more than what was in the article. It says in the article that he accompanied his family, but not that he took the Communion wafer.
...the criterion for reception of holy communion is the same for persons with developmental and mental disabilities as for all persons, namely, that the person be able to distinguish the Body of Christ from ordinary food, even if this recognition is evidenced through manner, gesture, or reverential silence rather than verbally. Pastors are encouraged to consult with parents, those who take the place of parents, diocesan personnel involved with disability issues, psychologists, religious educators, and other experts in making their judgment. If it is determined that a parishioner who is disabled is not ready to receive the sacrament, great care is to be taken in explaining the reasons for this decision. Cases of doubt should be resolved in favor of the right of the baptized person to receive the sacrament. The existence of a disability is not considered in and of itself as disqualifying a person from receiving the eucharist.
Regards,
Oh my I think God has picked this church to show the truth of who God really is. Long suffering. Do you really think that compared to God any of our human behaviors are much removed from this young mans? Maybe we aren’t peeing in our pants or spitting at our neighbors but I would bet that we are some pretty sad creatures in comparison to a Holy Loving God. In our minds everyday we pizz and spit on our neighbors. Maybe we hide it better. We really have no vision for covering our sisters and brothers in the love of God. Bless this young man and his family and hopefully people will rise up and see the purpose of “church”.
