Jump seat in the cockpit is OK, but you have to be certified to sit there. And I can tell you from experience that the jump seats in the older DC-9's (attached to the cockpit door) were rather uncomfortable.
Then again, when the stewardess (they weren't flight attendants yet) had to deliver coffee it became "interesting".

Last time I gave up my seat together they had severals groups with kids and was moved once and then asked if I could just stand in the back till all was done. When everything was settled I was in first class.
