Can we make it in 6 weeks or, better still, 6 days?

Aren’t speculators also driving down the dollar?

That’s true, the dollar is weak and contributing to the situation.

In my opinion, and I have no money right now to invest in the markets, as the fed keps cutting rates the value of the dollar goes down. As far as the oil bubble, if it looks like McCain is going to win in september, I think then it comes apart. The markets crave stability. A democrat in the white house means cutting and running in Iraq, socialized medicine and socialized oil. If obama is way ahead in the polls, I think prices would continue to go up. Unless Chavez promises his buddy cheap oil.

As I removed the hose from my gas tank while filling up this morning, I noticed some gas had accidentally dripped to the pavement. Do any of these scumbag speculators want to raise gas prices for this too?

What are the profit margins for the large oil companies? Are they far greater than other industries of businesses?

Few ever ask that question do they.

Boom and Bust has been the oil industry cycle for many decades for many cycles.

That's for certain. My wife worked for Texaco in their corporate offices for 30 years when Texaco was damn near bankrupt and had to sell its most profitable assets to generate cash. No one remembers that though.

After reading about the Iranian economic problems I’m convinced that the LAST thing Ahmaheadjob wants right now is to quit exporting oil.

Go see the link at post # 21 and at that link is an article about record profits, increased revenues, sales, anything and everything except Exxon's tax bill and how much money they actually get to keep.
Around noon of today C-Span was covering hearings on whether the Strategic Petroleum Reserve should continue to be filled. Any question of drilling for more supply was approached like a mongoose sizing up a King cobra.
Lots of mushy stuff about conservation and biofuels, though.

-—and everything except Exxon’s tax bill and how much money they actually get to keep-—

Amazing the data they have such trouble finding.

ExxonMobil 2007
Revenue $404.6 Billion
Profit $40.6 Billion (10.0%)
Taxes $102.5 Billion (25.3%)

Sales-Based taxes $31.728B
Other taxes and duties $40.953B
Income taxes $29.864B

....i for one don’t care about the other numbers.....

Why? I huge company has huge $$$ in all the categories. It also has a huge number of shares of stock and associated number of stock holders.

If it were broken into 20 smaller companies, making the same profit ratio, it would not be news. The same money would change hands, the price would still be the same.

Why is profit ratio so hard to understand?

Whose impressed with the truth? The truth is not a defense of the oil companies’ mistakes and dumb actions, it's just the truth.
I figure that anyone with the same resources I have can find the same information. No excuses!
Good find on your part. thanks!

Okay.

RUN! BEEES! BEEES! ARRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHH!
(from Tommy Boy)

BTW...just kidding. I always appreciate your thoughtful and well researched posts on energy matters. We have energy issues to be sure, but panic, suggestions to just take over the Middle East, and blaming it on “Big Oil” aren’t going to do anything other than stoke flames.

OTOH, maybe taking over the Middle East isn’t such a bad idea...

RUN! BEEES! BEEES! ARRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHH!

I was once at their field in Boothville, LA (near Venice at the end of the River) after dodging a Thunderstorm flying back from a platform.

I was outside watching the storm coming, just walking around and not paying a lot of attention to where I was walking.

They started screaming at me to get off the field.

We weren't the only one trying to dodge the storm.

Those "bees" were coming fast from all directions.

As is the profit.

Again, take the same total, profit and expenses.

Divide by 20 into different companies.

Nobody would talk about it at all and it is the exact same numbers.

ExxonMobil is not a couple of Texans; there are 5.35 BILLION shares of ExxonMobil Stock. Most of it is held by financial institutions. If you have 401k or IRAs invested in mutual funds, you probably hold some as well. The “Insiders” that are stockholders are less than 1/10 of 1% of the stock.

you continue to try and divide that huge profit up over 20 companies and say no one will care...well that is not reality...what is reality is a handful of oil companies all making record i repat record profits at the expense of the american comsumer that being you and i....don’t get me wrong, i don’t mind a company making a profit but when it is hurting the people of this country then i do mind the obscene profits that are being raked in especially when they are putting so little back into building new refineries etc and increasing capacity.......
