The judges explained that if no sea lions are removed this year, they might consume between 212 and 2,094 spring chinook salmon protected by the Endangered Species Act, according to federal estimates. .

According to that logic it should be OK for a timber company to log even if it "takes" a couple of spotted owls in the process.

The madding thing about sea lions is they don't eat the whole salmon but just takes a couple of bites out of it and moves on to the next one. These rats are camped at the mouth of every river from Monterey to Seattle...

Good point but the numbers cited by these judges are completely bogus, I believe those sea lions could take up to ten times what they cited.

I was born and raised in Newport Beach, went to Kaiser Jr. High and Newport Harbor High, and I was at the beach almost daily.

I never saw the huge numbers of sea lions we see today!

Two sea lions trapped and on their way to Tacoma and beyond

Thursday, April 24, 2008
By MICHAEL ANDERSEN Columbian Staff Writer

State workers hauled at least two sea lions out of the Columbia River near Bonneville Dam that they say can be legally shipped to Sea World.

A sea lion dubbed C319, a five-year veteran on the river, and C739 were taken from river traps and lifted into a horse trailer this morning and early afternoon. They will be taken by truck to Tacoma’s Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

Sea lion veterinarians will check in on them Friday morning, said Craig Bartlett, who is with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Nine sea lions were captured this morning. However, three were not branded so were not eligible to be removed from the river. The other four also were not eligible.

A sea lion enters a trap before the gate is shut. Washington and Oregon fish and wildlife officials, and crane operators with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are among the 20 to 25 people trapping California sea lions at Bonneville Dam on Thursday. (The Columbian, Janet L. Mathews)

I was from inland and spent a lot of time in the summers there in the ‘50s then later in the 60’s my folks bought a beach home up on 44th St. I didn’t spend any time at the harbor after that.
