You know my parish is packed. Lines up and down the street with no room to park. And standing room only at most masses.

I have no problem with what Pope said. I am just saying that what would have happenned if similar innocent quote came from a different source.

I think Tancredo is suffering from McCainitis. Desire to get some attention. What better way then to pounce on Pope’s quote, stretch it, just a little bit of misinterpretation, and next thing you know, you got Open-Borders-Pope.

Once you take a backhanded shot at Pope, you get attention.

So you -- and Tancredo -- don't think that immigrants should be protected from violence and allowed to live "dignified lives"?

Of course- IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY- or here, if they enter LEGALLY.

That’s not how the Catholic church operates. There is no discussion of “increasing membership” evangelization yes, but not “membership” the way Protestant storefront churches look at it.

I used to like Tancredo but he’s talking like a fool here.

The issue, from the view of the Church, is the human dignity and social justice due to all men, not the Catholicity of immigrants.

Then he should be talking about dignity and justice in Mexico, not here. Get a grip.

may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions,

Gee, like saving our culture, not packing our prisons, not killing our citizens with their cultural sport of DUI and not bankrupting our hospitals and schools?

I believe the Chatechism would support my position.

"That is an idiotic statement. If they are Catholics in Mexico then they are Catholics wherever they go."

I agree 100%. It is one thing to disagree with the Pope on the issue of immigration, but quite another to pretend to be a mind reader and attack the Pope personally for having ulterior motives. I never have had any respect for those who have to resort to ad Homenin attacks to make a point. I had a great deal of respect for Tancredo, but this foot in the mouth statement has greatly diminished that respect.

And I believe he meant LEGAL immigration.

Then why would he even bring it up? We have absolutely no issue in this country with legal immigration, and we haven't for a long time. That's like bringing up the War of 1812.

Yes, we've got a country full of illegal-alien-loving politicians and we've got a country full of voters who vote for the illegal-alien-loving politicians. Yet here we have Tancredo stretching and misinterpreting the Pope's words on immigration even though the Pope has NOTHING to do with our immigration policy.

Is it any wonder why we are drowning in illegals.

What a waste of time.

ccc 2241 is a great agruement for even my own church. they tell us all the time we have obligation to illegals. This says that they much obey the laws and carry the civil burden. Inherently every illegal alien is in voilation of CCC 2241.

"Maybe should have just ignored the Pope, and let his statements drift into the news dustbin."

No, he could have attacked the substance of the Pope's argument without a childish personal attack on the Pope's "perceived" motivation. Tancredo needs to grow up!

"Here is Michelle Malkin’s take on it:"

Apparently Tancredo is not the only one who has a hard time sticking to refuting the substance of an argument, rather than than conjuring up some dire motive.

Hmmm. From that excerpt, it sound like illegal immigration is a sin. Funny that the Catholic Church is encouraging it.

Maybe they just missed the reading that day.

Actually, the Catholic Church, to their credit, is concerned with making this world better, just as much as they’re concerned with the afterlife.

I just disagree with their position on this particular issue, as well as a few others. They have a tendency to become socalistic in practice, much like some elements of the emergent chuch movement.

Okay, I'll take your word. I have no idea what the internal processes are, myself.

There is evidence that it is more than just “perceived” motivation. Even CBS, of all places, is reporting that the Pope has followed the lead of many US Cardinals in pushing for more open borders:

http://cbs4denver.com/local/tancredo.pope.immigration.2.703118.html

Also see Michelle Malkin’s write-up that I posted earlier.

Some may say Tancredo acts on knee-jerk reactions. Others say he fearlessly hits issues head-on. I agree that attacking the substance without attacking the Pope himself might have been the most prudent way to do it.
