Yeah, it’s broken. It’s crazy, but to fix that I need to upgrade the operating system kernel (due to a dependency of a dependency requiring a more recent version of the Linux kernel.) And that is almost certainly going to require a trip to San Jose, which will happen later tonight. I didn’t notice the problem until after I started the upgrade of the last remaining hold-out of the system updates (which had been running most of the ‘odds and ends’ programs on the site i.e. everything that wasn’t an article page or index page.)
John,
Great changes on the site, but one nit to pick if I may. Can we get the old formatting back on the Pings page? The new formatting, where all the text is the same size, is a lot harder to read. Thanks, and have fun with the hammer!

funny...I read your entire paragraph without a hitch! guess that study was right! LOL
While I am griping, I also hate the "comments" page. It is hard to read now. Weren't the comments divided by a horizontal rule before? Is this a work in progress or is this the final layout? If it is, it will take some getting used to.
On a positive note, FR is still on the internet and for that, John, I thank you. :-)
"Leave the Kernel alone!"
A problem just started today on our FReepmail.
The “replied” indicator is not showing up.

Another thought to ponder...after leaving a thread, it’s nice to use your ping list to go back and find that thread again to see if new posts have been made. Would it be possible for the layout to be the same as beforethe new ping list is so hard to read and very close together, making my navigating method very difficult.
That would help NEWBIES immensely. I've searched on the Home Page and stabbed around in the 'SEARCH' function for FR tutorials. I'm still learning how to navigate FR since joining 2-14-08. I honestly don't even know how I managed to stumble onto this thread, but glad I did.
hey John........HAMMER THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!/ sarc
I always wanted to say that to the boss...............lololololol
Clear pings does the job. The compressed format is also okay. We’ll get used to it.
I'm one of those with way too much time on their hands who has fancified up his profile page way too much.
I wouldn't want to lose it.
Guess I'll set up a cron job to copy down my profile page every day to one of my backup servers.
If anyone else is reading this and would like me to backup their profile page as well, give me a holler. I should be able to add your profile page to my backup script easy enough. If all goes according to plan, this will enable me to recover the contents of any such profile page, to any requested day in the past, on or after today.Would you like me to backup your freeper profile page?
John, could you disable you can edit this page or something, until it's no longer a loaded .45 aimed at users privates ... er eh ... publics?
Is there an “undo clear pings” function? I clicked it thinking it would just get rid of that constant “New posts to you” display at the top of the screen, but seemed to delete all pings since sign-on date.
I understand if there is no “undo clear pings” function, but thought it would be worth mentioning.
Thanks for all you do.
It looks like you have also hard-coded out ‘LIVE’ threads showing up in latest posts?
That’s a good thing.
Theyre still in the View All area even when theyre cleared.
For me, I use this as sort of a to-do list. The indicator stays lit reminding me that I havent decided (or havent had the time) to respond to something. With the old behavior my indicator clears when I view the ping, then I get busy, get distracted, and forget all about writing a response. Maybe its just me, but this new behavior provides a better work flow.
Thanks for the explanation.
I think this is great revenge on the posters who diss California all the time....Heeheehee..
Step away from the computer, and no one gets hurt!!!!
