Legislation against selling, making, hiring or importing samurai swords in England and Wales has come into force.

So. Prior to this law was there a huge UK market in sword rentals? What effect will this have on those who made a living renting out swords? Did the Barristers and Solicitors think of that? Well did they?

England becomes a more repressive society everyday through parliamentary procedure.

Hey you folks over there, 1984 was supposed to be a warning not a blueprint.

Carrying a sword in public is already illegal.

Eight years ago a councillor was killed by a man wielding a samurai sword in the office of Cheltenham Liberal Democrat MP Nigel Jones.

Obviously this killer found the sword in the office of MP Nigel Jones. Lord knows an Englishman would never break the law by carrying a weapon illegally.

Missing the Point
Banning sharp kitchen knives won’t cut Britain’s violent crime.
2 June 2005

Violent crime continues to increase in Britain, by 17 percent last year alone. Stabbing is particularly fashionable, and up to a quarter of British 16-year-olds now claim to carry knives whenever they leave home, and to be prepared to use them. That is apparently what the Scouting motto, “Be Prepared,” now means to British children.

An anxious editorial in the British Medical Journal, penned by three emergency room doctors, offers a partial solution to the problem: ban the sale of kitchen knives with pointed ends. Such points serve for nothing, from the culinary point of view (the authors consulted several eminent chefs); but they sometimes inflict fatal wounds in the course of domestic arguments.

In the mid 1990s...someone caught up on “Kangaroo bars”...which are those fancy chrome bars that typically are found in Australia to fend off the Roo’s from going into your grill of the truck in the outback. They fancied them up and made them decoration...at a hefty price I may add.

So many Brits ran out and bought the bars for their SUVs. Somehow....over a period of time....someone gathered some data to show that several accidents had occurred where SUVs were the culprit and they had the Roo bars on the front...which the cop wrote that the large nature of the bars prevented the driver from seeing everything necessary. So some individual wrote this up in a paper...and kindly suggested that Roo bars be banned from the UK.

Shockingly enough...several radio station talking heads took up this cause....as did a couple of environmental groups and public safety groups. So in the course of two years....this was becoming one of the top ten safety issues in the UK for discussion. I sat in the UK on a deployment...listening to a local radio station...and thinking these guys must be nuts.

All of this continued....even into the 2000 period...with a article appearing in the Mother Jones monthly telling of the horror of Roo bars. So far...no one has outlawed the bars...at least not yet.

Anumber of years ago, in Chiang Mai, Thailand (yes -- Thailand?) young people started forming gangs. These gangs would deal drugs (Ya Ba -- Meth), hang out at open air roadside bars, and menace others with samurai swords. They roved in packs and killed several young people, including a couple of soldiers and their girl friends.

Nasty brutes.

Of course the knives, swords and other weapons they favored were sold all over the place. The touristy night market sold hundreds of "samurai" swords and roadside stands sold all kinds of knives for cutting bamboo, brush, rice, etc.. All very cheap. No age limits, of course.

The problem was solved by cleaning up the gangs (and none too gently). Several were killed when resisting.

The problem is a thing of the past. However, progressives are upset because the knife sales stands are still there, the roadside bars are still there, and the youths were roughly handled.

Go figure.

Next on the ban list will include the 15,000 year old ATLATL

or the 10,000 year old SLING.

Of course rubbing a fire hardened stick on pavement makes it durable and sharp and that too might be made illegal.
