It turns out that Obama and Clinton just want to help out the average American worker by making everything more affordable. And it turns out that all you have to do to make things more affordable is get the federal government involved. Healthcare costs got you down? Well, let’s make them more affordable. All we have to do is funnel more money and decision-making power through the federal government. College tuition? Let’s make that more affordable by having the federal government pay for it. Housing costs? Retirement? Job training? Groceries? TVs? Cars? Boats? There’s nothing you can think of that the federal government can’t make more affordable.

Sounds a hair's width away from serfdom to me.

The Founders had a name for this. They called it majority tyranny.

Sounds a hair's width away from serfdom to me.

Sounds a hair's width away from a civil war to me. Which is the primary reason that the worthless, braindead, nonproductive, scumbag, communist democRATS want to disarm the public. Armed people can stop a robbery, and they are decidedly against that.

re: the federal government can’t spend a cent that we don’t send it

Not so. They can simply make more money or borrow it from future generations. That's why we're in so deep right now. If we had any mechanism for forcing them to make the difficult decisions and not buy our votes with our own, and our children's, money we might stand a chance of pulling our fat out of the fire. But the way it's going right now there is no turning back.

Sure, the results of a properly enforced balanced budget amendment would be a disaster for a lot of people. But that disaster is nothing compared to what we face by not getting a handle on our spending.

Want to be able to afford the American Dream?

Save at 10% of your income.
Don't spend what you don't have.
Cut up your credit cards.
Don't buy what you don't need.
Stay away from predatory lending.
Don't have children you cannot afford.

Real spending reform (including balanced budgets) and tax reform are a must if we are ever “to keep our heads above water.” Both are radical ideas and need radical implementation in the Congress.

Rather than pay for healthcare—or whatever product—directly, you can huddle over forms and receipts and figure out how much to pay the IRS. The IRS, in turn, will funnel your money to the Department of Health and Human Services. The DHHS will then pay a well-staffed team of bureaucrats, some of whom will eventually direct some portion of your money back to pay for some portion of your healthcare. You sent in a dollar and it emerged as a quarter? Not to worry. This is all part of the process of making things more affordable.

If there was just one Republican in Washington DC that would stand up at a nationwide TV debate and earnestly say to the American people that he would support the ideals espoused in this remarkable paragraph, I'd follow him into the Gates of Hell.

Unfortunately, I can't think of a single one that would.

The democratic approach is to tax and spend. The republican approach is to cut taxes and spend. Either way we are screwed. The only ones that go away fat are the elected politicians

Cut up your credit cards.

No, don't carry cash, use an AMEX card payable on demand so you have the security of stopping payment if robbed.

Not after it gets to the point of paying $6,000,000 to buy a loaf of bread.

Then, the politicians suffer too. ; )
