A very good friend who knew a lot about medical research told me the studies that linked cholsesterol and hardening of the arteries were not authoratative, the medical profession ran with them anyway.

Read Gary Taubes' book Good Calories, Bad Calories for an eye-opening look at that.

Zetia evidentially made me violently sick at night, about three hrs after taking.
The others seem to cause leg cramps. At least that it what I think is causing them, plus some weird leg pains.

I just quit taking Zocor. I have had good results with flaxoil in lowering my triglycerides. Can’t tolerate fish oil.

I have not been able to find a brand of Red Yeast Rice that was not made in China. Do you know of one? Thanks.

I use Nutrition Express for my red yeast rice and other supplements

He doesn’t say what his numbers were before using Zocor.

Make sure you have the latest version of Adobe Reader.

You shouldn’t be having those problems. Perhaps you need more memory?

That's correct. Did nothing to improve outcomes compared to Zocor alone.

In no subgroup, in no segment, was there any added benefit in terms of reducing plaque

Statement from the study showing a higher dose of the statin is better than a lower dose with respect to intima-media thickness:

Among patients who received 80 mg of simvastatin only in our study, the progression of intima–media thickness was 0.0029 mm per year, as compared with 0.018 mm per year in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia who received 40 mg of simvastatin in the ASAP study — a reduction by a factor of 6 among patients receiving the higher dose.

To all: The study DOES NOT say the statin does not work! It says that adding the second drug DOES NOT improve things.

I see where you're coming from but I really have nothing against traditional Chinese medicinal products that were around long before globalism!

Ernest, my wife and I were prescribed Vytorin by the doc for marginal chlorestorol numbers.

We both developed pains in our lower legs within days, something neither of us had ever had before. We are both in early fifties with excellent health records and no major problems.

We stopped taking Vytorin. We take flaxseed oil capsules instead.

The leg pain stopped whe the Vytorin stopped.

BTW, we told the doc why. And you should tell the doc if you have muscle pains—he should know as muscle pain is something I believe the drug literature says he should be told.

I can’t tell you what to do, but please try all the alternative methods before taking Statins. I truly believe that those things are deadly. My colesterol has been pushing 400 for years and I have no problems. Dr. says it’s genetic. I refuse to take Statins. I’ve known too many people taking Statins who have worse problems that never seem to go away until they eventually die. All of my forbears lived into their 90s. If my colesteral is genetic, I should worry? I’ll take my chances with the honey/vinegar, niacin, high fiber diet, etc.

He has been told, and we decided to cut back from every day to twice a week,...which helped a lot, but still will have pains when I use a muscle very much...I may try going without for awhile and see what that does....working on diet aspects....

It’s not possible to avoid “messing up your system” if you eat avocados all the time. I’ve had to use the latrines in both Juarez and TJ City, and let me tell you those bad boys use LOTS and LOTS of avocado, and it’s messing up their systems!

Quick solution for that pain ~ stop taking the statins for a couple of days. The pain will go away and stay away, usually 2 to 4 weeks. When it returns stop taking the status again.

There are statins that do not cause the pain but they are the ones that seem to have no effect on the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

I've found that statins synthesized from raw chemicals cause less distress than those grown in frankenfood type fungi. They also cost less.

Yeah, that’s why I said I re-read in another post. Just wondering what his numbers were before ANY meds.

I have nothing against traditional Chinese medicine. I don't trust modern Chinese manufacturing nor do I trust them to be honest about the products they sell.

I heartily recommend taking a lot of Omega-3 fish oil, both because it raises your “good” cholesterol, which acts to balance your “bad” cholesterol, and it also has mild anti-inflammatory properties.

Omega-6 oil, which we get too much of in our diets, compared to Omega-3, has a mild inflammatory effect. So if you take fish oil supplements, get just the ‘3’ and not the ‘6’. (There is also Omega-9, which you can get in olive oil.)

No problem. Too often I see/hear the media spout something off about a medication & people quit taking them, instead of asking a professional. I have no doubt the media has contributed to the deaths of many.

Doc put me on Vytorin due to high triglyceride count - around 370. Had been on Tricor for 6 months in attempt to bring tri's down, without result. So tried Vytorin. Bingo! HDL, LDL, Triglycerides, total cholesterol now good.

In case you didn't suspect, I'm not too concerned about this - or any study. They seem to contradict the previous study most of the time.
