The movie on my grandson's Platoon will be aired Monday night - along with an update of “Where Are They Now? and a video on platoon buddy, SSGT Sal Giunta, Medal of Honor recipient.
This movie will set you back on your heels. No Hollywood stars, no ‘theme’, no plot, no agenda - it just puts you boots on the ground with the 173rd AIRBORNE, 2-503rd BATTLE co., as the sh*t goes down.
Isolated on a tiny promontory on a mountain top surrounded by Taliban - a 2 hour hike in full gear up the mountain, dodging bullets, 2 hours from the nearest firebase - no power, no hot water, no hot food, no computers - NOTHING - or as writer, producer, director, Sebastian Junger (co produced with Tim Hetherington) said, they “were essentially on Mars.”
they spent 15 months in that “Valley of Death” as it was known - i.e. The Korengal Valley in the Kunar Dist of no. eastern Afghanistan on the border.
The have fought their way into history - ABC did a documentary on them in Nov 2007 (available in line and YouTube), Vanity Fair and NYTimes Mag. have done several articles, CNN, MSNBC, Fox, etc.
Sebastian and Tim submitted the movie to Sundance Film Festival last Jan - it took top prize: Grand Jury Award. It just made the short list for best documentary for the Oscar.
It just made headlines again with Platoon member, SSGT Sal Giunta - as he became the first living recipient of the Medal of Honor since the Viet Nam War.
National Geo will air the move and a video of “Where Are The Now?” (Most are out and a handful, including my grandson, just got back to Italy after a second deployment) and a video of SSGT Giunta. I've seen the movie and the SSGT Giunta video.
This is a movie that give the world a look at what WAR is like for our soldiers. Raw. Unvarnished. Horrific. Heroic.
Let's do them the honor of watching.
