The Democratic Party changed long before the 1960’s. If anyone remembers a movie called Sunrise At Campabello, one recalls the struggle for the 1924 Democratic nomination. Prior to that the Democratic Party was dominated by its rural and populist roots. After 1924, the urban wing of the Party, led by Al Smith and, later, by FDR gained control.
