Mitt as VP would be the only thing that would get my vote for a McCain ticket. I believe strongly that McCain will die in office and I see Mitt Romney as the only person out there with the CEO qualifications to step into the presidency.

“Conservatives love him,”

Count me out. And at $400 a vote, the Romney return on investment is a boat anchor.

Coburn is great you have heard of him and I have, anyone else? Seeing no hands... Does he have a half billion in the bank like Romney?

McCain’s age is one of his biggest assets in wooing the conservative vote. If McCain picks a conservative VP he’s a lock.

A lot of conservatives will have a much easier time putting the clothespin on the nose for McCain if there was strong conservative on the ticket. This VP would have a 50% chance of being the GOP nominee in 2012, since there’s a good chance McCain wouldn’t seek a second term, and 95% in 2016 if McCain tries to put in the eight years.

I thought it was common knowledge that McCain was a one termer. Can't recall where I heard it but I thought that was his mantra.

My worse fear is that he made a deal with my Gov.,Crist , to be his VP in return for giving McCrazy Fla. in the primary.

If so we are screwed! Crist is one of the worst RINOS to come down the pike in a long time.

Marshall. Clement. Sanford.

Accept no liberal substitutes. Romney can be Barry’s running mate.

Not sure about that. Recent converts are usually the most devoted. And I think Romney’s sensible enough to want to keep an active, supportive Conservative base for a future run.

Romney should be first on McCain's 'bucket list', IMO.

That combo would make me happy enough to pull the lever for McDaddy.
Good Lord, we don't need Fred as a running mate.....sheesh, he was one of my faves, but the 2 of them are just to old together!

But the VP position is almost entirely symbolic

Not necessarily so with this Presidential nominee. McCain's age and personal history makes reprising WH Harrison conceivable. If so we want a better fall-back position than Harrison, a Whig, who picked a Democrat, John Tyler, for his VP. The Whig's landslide victory under Harrison turned to naught when Tyler turned back into a Democrat. We don't want McCain reaching across the aisle for one of his buddies (e.g. McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Feingold, McCain-Leiberman, etc.) We at least want some one no worse from our viewpoint. A VP who's a potential upgrade, as Quayle was for Bush41, would be better yet and might not turn out to be just symbolic. The hard core anti-Mitt types may disagree as to Romney's bonafides, but he did try to run on McCain's right and, after Fred and Duncan's departures removed those options the majority of Freepers did then consider him to be a better conservative option than McCain. Mitt may or may not be the best VP option, but he's certainly not the worst one I can imagine McCain picking. I hope he picks someone at least as conservative as Mitt. Then let God decide when and if both McCain and the VP deserve promotions.

There’s something utterly surreal about voting for someone based on the hope that he dies as soon as possible after the election.

I think Mitt’s a good solution, given where we are. But I sincerely hope you won’t vote for Obama or Hillary—by staying home—if McCain picks otherwise.

McCain is going to pick Gov. Mark Sanford. And he should.

LOL!

Don’t know anything about Sanford’s finances, but I have a feeling McCain is going to pick him. I think it would be a great choice because Sanford is a young Governor who would please conservatives. He does not come from a swing state, but I still think McCain would go for him.

I do agree with you that Charlie Crist would be a terrible choice. He is suspect with conservatives and there is the rumors about his sexuality. Fortunately, McCain will probably handily win Florida anyway especially with the Demoncrats refusing to seat their delegates.

No...of course not. Once the candidates are in the finals, the necessary money is a bit easier to raise. My point is only that Coburn sees conservative issues with a little more clarity and genuine conviction than does Romney.
