I was driving in Massachusetts last weekend and I saw one of these and while I have great sympathy for those who have children with Autism I could not help but chuckle at this. Wouldn't be enough to put up a Caution sign indicating children at play? What next? Mentally handicapped crossing signs?

Not really because you expect normal children to react in a normal way. It is an "Expect the Unexpected" warning sign.

it is amazing that people with such insensitivity walk among us. perhaps there should be a sign permanently posted outside your house that reads “shockingly ignorant person in area.” i have a severely Autistic, 10 year old child and have fears every day that she could wander out into the street and get hit by a passing car. having known someone whose sister was killed by a motorist at that same tender age, i think often about the horror through which that family lived. i also remember the incredible torture experienced since then by the driver of the car that ran the child down—i knew him too. for your sake, i hope that you are not ever in such a position.

Obviously you and the others that were so negative about this sign do not know what it is like to have a mentally disabled child. I have a child with Down Syndrome and if I can find a sign that says that, I want it posted with the stop sign in front of my house...along with the Slow Children sign posted down the street. Our children are handicap, but if you see the universal sign, you expect to see someone in a wheelchair (as the sign portrays). Our kids look like regular kids but when you are driving down the road (or speeding) and you honk your horn and the child doesn't respond, they are not acting dumb or acting out of disrespect just to give you a hard time...it's because they DO NOT understand they need to STOP as the car comes racing towards them...or they DO NOT understand they can't just walk out into the road and not get hurt as the car comes closer.

Get a book, read it, and get educated about special needs children and adults. And by the way, with the Slow Children sign, and the Stop sign and the universal handicap sign posted in front of my house - - drivers continue to disregard all of them and speed down my road, blast through the stop sign and wave us off like we are nothings as we shout at them as they race by.
