Story was a lot brighter than to imagine the US a kingdom as late as 1833. He was also writing 30+ years before the 14th Amendment was allegedly enacted and that amendment was ruled to incorporate (force) upon the states at least key sections of the Bill of Rights including the First Amendment freedom of religion. If he was alive to sit on SCOTUS under Jackson's friend and appointee Catholic Chief Justice Roger B. Tawney, I can just imagine Story trying to defend such bigoted nonsense. That quote is the first negative I have seen against Story.

Like I said, it seems to have been used as a general term meant to encompass a broad range of political systems - kingdoms, republics, etc. He was writing on the appropriate separation of religious beliefs from civil law, regardless of the branch of government involved so I don't see the 14th Amendment as being an issue. The only thing that makes it a "negative against Story" is that you disagree with it, and implicitly assert that you cannot be wrong.

Please note that I was not arguing the merits of paleoconservatism, but only pointing out that it was a substantial portion of conservatism at one time.

Personally, I am somewhere in between the paleoconservatives and the neoconservatives. I cannot sign on with either faction, as they both hold some views which are distastful to me.

And yes, Coolidge was the Reagan of his time, in my opinion: a man who is closest to my views. He was not a complete isolationist like the paleoconservatives, but he was careful about intervening in foreign countries, and withdrew some troops from the Dominican Republic, while leaving some in Nicaragua and Haiti.

He was a small government conservative, who understood the constitutional limits of the federal government, and tried to follow those limits. My impression is that he did so not because of ideology, but because of his character.

[we Catholics buried the Roman Empire long ago.]

LOL. Emperor Constantine would be amused.  Is it "Sun"day yet?

Care to explain the historical relationship between "Easter" and "Ishtar", Bishop?

Good thing the Roman Catholic church has no goddesses... oh wait.

Is VISA ok for the indulgence?

I have to admit that your anti-Catholic bigotry goes well with your anti-Mexican bigotry. You display a certain symmetry of views. Are they shared by paleoPaulie???

Ah yes, when confronted by the truth, retreat to the refuge of "hate speech".

Explain the historical relationship between "Easter" and "Ishtar", Bishop.
