“How about a “Government living beyond their means” sin?”

I’d file that under glutony!

Doesn’t sound like it to me. Sounds like the priest has the power when the real power lies with God.

The Vatican always muddies the waters about sin and salvation.

For ALL have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Rom. 3:23
Everyone is condemned, because all have sinned!

For the wages of sin is death the the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Chist our Lord. Rom 6:23
ANY sin bring eternal death but God made the total and only provision for salvation through the finished work of Christ death and resurrection.

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name John 1:12

For by grace are you saved through faith and that not of your selves. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. Eph. 2:7&8.
You are not saved by good works, moral living, going to church, etc.
But these are things believers do after salvation.

that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.” Rom 10:9-13

not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, Titus 3:5

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; I Tim 2:5

Philippian Jailer's Salvation Acts 16

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody's chains came loose. The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!"

The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household." Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized. The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole family.

“Those priests who have been caught, have been defrocked.”

I beg to differ. I think I may have heard one case like that, but in most cases the priests are reassigned.

That said, I think the problem is no more prevalent among priests than any other group - letter carriers had a ring busted where I live, for example - I think they just get more press. For the reason that their group should be above it.

So, once you’ve decided you want no more children, your sex life is over? Have fun with that!

Oooh! We wouldn't want our *sex lives* to be over would we!!! Because it's soooo horrible to be chaste! It's not like Jesus or St. Paul ever lived that way or anything! /sarc

Honestly folks, what are we, little yapping puppy dogs at a party rubbing up against people's legs? Get a hold of yourselves. Take a cold shower. :)

“Bishop Girotti said that mortal sins also included taking or dealing in drugs, and social injustice which caused poverty or “the excessive accumulation of wealth by a few.”

I’d be worried if I were the Pope, considering the wealth that has been accumulated by the Vatican.

I thought that the list was: (from a different article) Mgr Girotti named the new mortal sins to be (1)genetic modification; (2) human experimentations, (3) polluting the environment; (4) social injustice; (5) causing poverty; (6) financial gluttony; and (7) taking drugs.

Where is abortion and contraception?

No, the priest does not possess the power, Jesus does. And the priest knows it.

Thanks for the bible scripture. But maybe 1st John is talking about spiritual light or darkness or spiritual life or death.

Or perhaps he is simply talking about sin, which would make sense since that is a central theme of the epistle.

And up earlier in First John chapt 2 God tells us that Jesus Christ takes care of all that for us.

And then LATER, John goes further in his explanation about the forgiveness of sin.

You illustrate PRECISELY what Peter warned about in 2 Peter 3:15-16.

Good reply. It was explained to me like this; Altering your body to prevent conception is tantamount to telling God that he got it wrong and you have to fix it.

The Book of Hebrews tells me I don’t need a priest to know it and tell me. The Book of Hebrews tells me I can know it from God directly for myself.

I am very thankful that Jesus died and paid the price for ALL our sins, whether they’re on the list or not!
