You are not saved by good works, moral living, going to church, etc.
But these are things believers do after salvation.

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody's chains came loose. The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!"
The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"
They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household." Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized. I beg to differ. I think I may have heard one case like that, but in most cases the priests are reassigned.
That said, I think the problem is no more prevalent among priests than any other group - letter carriers had a ring busted where I live, for example - I think they just get more press. For the reason that their group should be above it.

Or perhaps he is simply talking about sin, which would make sense since that is a central theme of the epistle.
And up earlier in First John chapt 2 God tells us that Jesus Christ takes care of all that for us.
And then LATER, John goes further in his explanation about the forgiveness of sin.

Good reply. It was explained to me like this; Altering your body to prevent conception is tantamount to telling God that he got it wrong and you have to fix it.
The Book of Hebrews tells me I don’t need a priest to know it and tell me. The Book of Hebrews tells me I can know it from God directly for myself.
