The DC school system is at best run poorly, and at worst, run corruptly.

I wish Rhee the best in a tough situation

There is an old physician’s axiom: obstruction begets infection. This is a great management axiom as well: when the facts are hidden or when management is entrenched and does not have to take responsibility for its decisions, then it is easy for bad things to happen.

The problems with public school start with hiding the true, full, cost of public education. They also hide the Dark Side of that cost: the cost in lives lost, in opportunities passed by, in students who “graduate” with skills that are way below their potential.

The Education Establishment “owns” and has full control over the mechanisms and legal authority of granting credentials to both teachers and institutions. This is just a shameful, decadent, wasteful, self-serving mess.

We can have the best wishes for Rhee but Rhee is the head of a CORRUPT and BROKEN system that can only be “fixed” by liquidation and conversion to a private system of competitive suppliers, paid for by the customer, just like we buy groceries, cars, shoes or anything else we need in our lives.
